Dodge and Chrysler Recall Vehicles to Fix Airbag Covers

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is recalling almost 1 million vehicles because pieces of the driver’s-side airbag cover could act as dangerous projectiles during a crash.

The automaker says that parts of the plastic airbag cover can detach and strike occupants if the airbags deploy, and that it is aware of at least 14 injuries to drivers that may be related to this issue. The affected vehicles do not have airbags supplied by Takata, and the recall involves the airbag cover, not the airbag itself.

Until a loose recall repair is completed, the FCA states that the owners of the affected cars shall not alter the plastic trademarks attached to the airbag cover on the guide wheel.

The problem: Clips that are part of the airbag cover may loosen over time. If the airbag deploys, these clips—and the plastic emblem attached to the cover—may become projectiles that could injure the driver.

The fix: Dealers will replace the airbag cover, free of charge.

How to Touch the Manufacturer: FCA says it will start informing the owners of the affected cars next month. You can also call 800-853-1403.

NHTSA Cross Number: NHTSA still has a cross number for this recall.

Check to see whether your vehicle has an open recall: NHTSA’s website will tell you whether your vehicle has any open recalls that need to be addressed.

If you insert your car’s 17-digit vehicle identity number (VIN) on the NHTSA online page and the recall does not appear, it means your vehicle has lately no pickups in progress. Because automakers occasionally take into account recalls, and for many older vehicles, we suggest that you review recalls.

Despite my love for ancient and original European sedans like the Renault Medallion, my hobby is to help others find a safe and reliable car that makes them smile, even if they are caught in traffic. When I don’t drive or write, you’ll probably find me exploring a new city on foot or making plans for my next trip.
