BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — A Bend passenger who used a rideshare service to drive from the Deschutes County Stabilization Center to Sisters early Friday morning, then assaulted the 77-year-old driver and stole his car, driving it toward Santiam Pass. in Lane County, where he crashed, he tried to borrow another car, but was hit and arrested, Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies said.

Deschutes County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched shortly before 3 a. m. to the scene of the attack and carjacking of a vehicle in Sisters, the sergeant said. County 911 dispatchers said a 21-year-old man attacked a rideshare driver and stole his vehicle.

Investigators decided the suspect, known as Joshua Davis Buck, was at the stabilization center and asked for a carpool with Sisters, which the center ordered. Once at Sisters, Buck asked the driver, a 77-year-old Redmond man, to drop him off near the Sisters Inn and Suites, Wall said.

When the vehicle stopped, the driver assaulted and seriously injured “and dragged out of the vehicle” by the assailant, the sergeant said.

Buck allegedly stole the vehicle and drove west on Highway 20 toward Santiam Pass. Wall said deputies were able to locate the vehicle as Buck continued west on State Highway 126 toward Vida.

The driver of the rideshare was seriously injured and transported to St. Petersburg. John’s. Charles Bend, the sergeant said.

“I let them in first and he said, ‘You have to sit down,'” she recalled. “So he sat there and we were on the phone with the girl who. . . She would ask him questions about how to best help him.

“I’m very pleased that I was able to help and that he’s doing well,” Magian said.

Meanwhile, Deschutes County dispatchers notified authorities at the spaces where the stolen vehicle was traveling, Wall said.

Around four in the morning, they learned that the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and Springfield police were headed to a multi-vehicle crash near Vida.

Lane County deputies discovered Buck at the crash scene, “where he was actively attempting to borrow a second vehicle from the crash site,” Wall said in a news release.

“The driver of this vehicle managed to flee, running over (the suspect) in the process,” he added.

It was decided that Buck had run over the stolen rideshare vehicle “and was actively attempting to borrow a second vehicle to continue his escape,” the sergeant said.

Buck was arrested and taken to a domain hospital for evaluation and repair of his injuries. He was then taken to the Deschutes County Jail in Bend and jailed for first-degree robbery, second-degree assault and unauthorized operation of a vehicle.

On Friday, the district attorney filed six felony charges against Buck: first-degree burglary (Class A), second-degree assault and unauthorized operation of a vehicle (Class B) and 4 Class C felony counts: unauthorized use of a vehicle, third assault, first-degree burglary and carjacking. His arraignment is scheduled for Monday.
