David Cronenberg accused Francis Ford Coppola of sabotaging Crash’s to win the Palme d’Or at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival.

Cronenberg told Canadian Press, through ET Canada, that after the release of his film at the famous event, the legendary Oscar-winning director did his best to tell other voters not his moot J.G. adaptation. Ballard’s book.

Crash so debatable that the festival created a particular special jury award for the film. Cronenberg thinks only Coppola had a challenge with that.

“Coppola totally objected. I think he’s the director. When I asked why [Crash] received that special prize from the jury, well, I think it was the jury’s attempt to circumvent Coppola’s negativity, because they had the strength to create their own prize without the president’s approval. And that’s how they did it, but it was Coppola who actually objected.

So much so that, Cronenberg says, Coppola wouldn’t even have given him the prize “during the last Array rite. He asked someone else to give it to me. He wouldn’t do it himself.”

Cronenberg says he has met coppola several times since the incident, who has continually tried to protect the resolution to give Crash this special award.

“The strange thing is that I have met him several times at festivals. Always the first thing he says is, “Remember, we gave you this award. I swore to myself that the next time I said that, I would remind him that he wasn’t one of those looking to give [Crash] an award.”

Cronenberg even called Coppola small and added: “I was also president of the [Cannes] jury. You end up with rewards that you may not think are justified, unlike your team’s jurors. you have to be kind to that. I don’t think he was very kind.
