WEST POINT – In an undefeated battle, the Crofton women withstood an overdue comeback and retreated to beat the Guardian Angels Central Catholic 55-45 on Saturday.
The rivalry in the Mid-State Conference was more intense than ever on the defensive end, as the Warriors used a series of turnovers to build an 11-point lead.
The Blue Jays found their offensive rhythm late in the second and third quarters, though they eventually took the lead in the third.
But Crofton discovered answer after answer and retreated to take the victory by ten points.
Crofton incredibly effective on offense, especially Caitlin Guenther, whose only missed goal of the night came on a blocked shot.
GACC had beaten Crofton five times in a row before Saturday, adding their final meeting in the Class C2 third-place match at the 2023 state tournament.
Saturday’s game was the first genuine challenge for both teams. The Blue Jays started the night by beating their first four teams in conflict by an average of 36 points per game. Crofton’s average margin of victory before Saturday was 53 points.
