Critérium du Dauphiné: Kämna wins the level of the breakaway in the chaos of the GC
The last level of the Critérium du Dauphiné regularly promises drama and, on this occasion, a turn has come before the race has begun. General Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) left the race due to injuries sustained in his Stage 4 accident. His absence means that Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) is the de facto leader of the race today, however, the drafting of the Jumbo-Visma Statement calls into question Roglic’s clients for the Tour de France: “After his fall yesterday, Primoz Roglic, leader of the general classification and problems, will not begin the last level today. The evolution of your injuries will mark plans for the next races. Learn more here.
Roglic is the newest in a series of high-profile abandonments in this Critérium du Dauphiné. Egan Bernal (Team Ineos) retired before yesterday’s stage, causing a back injury. Steven Kruijswijk (Jumbo-Visma) surrendered after dislocating his shoulder in a crash on the descent of the Col de Plan Bois. Emanuel Buchmann fell in the same accident and left the race, as did his bora-Hansgrohe teammate Gregor Muhlberger. Bora-Hansgrohe reported that Buchmann suffered “a giant but controlled bruising to escape the fractures,” while Muhlberger “probably escaped from a damaged wrist, but will undergo a CT scan for confirmation.”
The last level of today’s Critérium du Dauphiné features no less than 8 unclosed ascents, adding the col de Romme out of the category and the Col de los Angeles Colombyre category 1. There are also two promotions of the Cote de Domancy, home to Bernard Hinault’s victory at the 1980 World Championships and, for the time being, a consecutive day, a superior climb in category 2 to the plateau of Megéve. The neutralized start is at 12:10 p.m. local time, and the platoon is expected to succeed at kilometer 0 at 12:20 p.m.
In Roglic’s absence, the revised classification is as follows:
1 Thibaut Pinot (Fra) Groupama-FDJ 17:45:46
2 Guillaume Martin (Fra) Cofidis 0:00:10
3 Mikel Landa Meana (Spa) Bahrain McLaren 0:00:12
4 Daniel Martínez (Col) EF Pro Cycling
5 Miguel Angel Lopez (Col) Astana Pro Team 0:00:18
6 Nairo Quintana (COL) Arkea-Samsic Team 0:00:21
7 Richie Porte (Aus) Trek-Segafredo
8 Tadej Pogacar (Slo) UAE Team Emirates 0:01:03
9 Romain Bardet (Fra) AG2R Los Angeles Mondiale 0:01:10
Ten Tom Dumoulin (Ned) Team Jumbo-Visma 0:01:49
Thibaut Pinot and Guillaume Martin will compete for the first French winner of the Dauphiné, as Christophe Moreau won his moment of overall victory in 2007. Moreau also won in 2001. The other French winners in the 30+ years were Armand De Las Cuevas ( 1998) and Charly Mottet, who achieved the 3rd of his 3 victories in 1992, after winning in 1987 and 1989.
The peloton sails in the neutralized zone of Megève before the start of the last level of a Critérium Dauphiné 2020 shorter than the general but no less tumultuous.
The 8 climbs in the schedule are:
km16.5 – Côte de Domancy (2.5 km at 9.4%), 2
km46 – Col de Romme (8.8km at 8.9%), Hors category
km60 – Col de los angeles Colombière (7.5 km at 8.5%), Category 1
km85 – Col des Aravis (10.1 km at 5.1%), Category 2
km98.5 – Côte de los angeles Frassette (2km at 6.1%), Category 4
km129 – Côte de Domancy (2.5 km at 9.4%), 2
km138 – Côte de Cordon (4.6 km at 8.2%), Category 2
km153.5 – Altiport Ascent (9 km to 4.6%), 2
The flag has fallen and level five of the Critérium du Dauphiné is officially underway.
Richie Porte summed up the lie from the field concisely before the final leg. “This race was run like five races in one day to be honest. It was surely terrible for everyone, so there are many types of knees. Today is going to be fireworks now that Roglic is out, so if there is a team that can compete, that is another question. “Porte knows all about the fireworks on the last day of the Dauphine, wasting the race to Jakob Fuglsang at this stadium in 2017. The Australian hopes to take advantage of past chaos here. He is seventh overall, 21 seconds at Pinot.
Two other non-riders, but still Roglic to report this morning. Benoît Cosnefroy (AG2R La Mondiale) withdrew with a back injury, while Omar Fraile (Astana) also did not start in Megève.
Thibaut Pinot is the new leader of the race, of course he is not wearing the yellow and blue jersey today. It was the French who came here to paint for the signing this morning.

There were no early attacks on this last level and the peloton is still combined after only about 10km of running. The Côte de Domancy will be the first ascent of the day. The ascent was the centerpiece of the 1980 world championships in Sallanches, considered by many to be the most difficult in history, as runners had to climb the Domancy 20 times for approximately 6,000m of climbing. Only 15 riders finished a race ruled by Hinault, who dropped his last rival, Gibi Baronchelli, on the last climb.
The Tour de France traveled to the Côte de Domancy in 2016, in large part to mark the last Tour d’Hinault in his capacity as an ASO ambassador. The climb took position in the 17km time trial from Sallanches to Meveve last week, a level gained through Chris Froome, Tom Dumoulin’s forward.
The actual start has also been delayed for 3 kilometers, due to some drivers having mechanical disorders in the neutralized zone.
Hugo Hofstetter (Israel Start-Up Nation), Fabien Grellier (Total-Direct Energie) and Jan Bakelants (Circus-Wanty Gobert) escaped the clutches of the peloton and climbed the Côte de Domancy with a small advantage.
Despite the absence of Primoz Roglic, Jumbo-Visma has given up on this Dauphine. The yellow and black team sets the speed in the peloton and the peloton splits.
Jumbo-Visma’s speed caused the break to be delayed and the box amused, leaving a determined leading organization that includes Sepp Kuss, Wout van Aert, Julian Alaphilippe and Thibaut Pinot.
Julian Alaphilippe leads Krists Neilands (Israel Start-Up Nation) to the most sensible of the Côte de Domancy, leading a small organization of ten riders.
This leading organization is 55 moments ahead of the rest of the platoon. There have been some conflicting reports on the composition of this organization, but all the testimonies agree that Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Mikel Landa (Bahrain-McLaren), Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale), Tom Dumoulin (Jumbo-Visma) , Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma), Wout van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) are here. It turns out that Pavel Sivakov (Ineos) and Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) have also succeeded, we are awaiting confirmation. Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), who started the day in the overall position for the moment, turns out to be a notable absentee.
There are fifteen riders with a 55-second advantage over a peloton led by Cofidis and Arkea-Samsic: Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Mikel Landa (Bahrain-McLaren), Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale ), Tom Dumoulin (Jumbo-Visma), Pavel Sivakov (Ineos), Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma), Adam Yates (Mitchelton-Scott), Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep), Marc Hirschi (Sunweb), Wout van Aert ( Jumbo-Visma), Jan Bakelants (Circus-Wanty Gobert), Alexey Lutsenko (Astana Pro Team), Jonathan Castroviejo (Team Ineos), Will Barta (CCC Team) and Hugo Hofstetter (Israel Start-Up Nation).
Of the top 10 on GC, Guillaume Martin, Nairo Quintana, Richie Porte and Dani Martinez are the men missing from this very dangerous front group. Cofidis and Arkea-Samsic are doing the heavy lifting behind for the time being.
The fifteen cooks turn through the valley towards the base of the Col de Romme hors d’oeuvre category, just over 10 kilometers away. They seem committed to this endeavor and are a little less than a minute in the pack.

Platoon at 0:55
Breakthrough advance slows as Col de Romme is practiced. The hole is reduced to 35 seconds.
Will Barta (CCC team) has walked away from this leading group, but his buffer has been reduced to just 20 seconds. The race can be resumed, temporarily, no doubt, on the lower slopes of the Col de Romme, but we can expect more fireworks.
The CPA issued an indication that riders had wanted to neutralize the opening segment of today’s level downhill to protest the risks they faced at yesterday’s level. The online race page reported that the genuine start was delayed due to two runners having mechanical issues in the neutralized zone, although it is not transparent at this time whether this was part of a CPA demonstration. One imagines that ASO, who have the ‘screen will have to go’ mentality, are unlikely to recognize a protest from a cyclist in their own newsfeed.
In any case, the CPA statement is as follows: “At this year’s Criterium du Dauphiné, the riders, together with the CPA, have asked to neutralize the first 10 km of descent of the fifth stage of the French race, saying that it is too dangerous and mentioning what happened at yesterday’s 4th stage. The riders want to send a clear signal of protest to both the organizers and to the UCI referring to the serious crashes and accidents that have occurred in the recent races, asking for greater attention to their safety.
“The CPA asks the UCI and all stakeholders of cycling to set up a round table to start the revision of the regulations to get a clear feedback in terms of prevention and sanctions towards the race organizers. The purpose of this is to protect the physical integrity of the riders and to allow them to carry out their work in greater safety.”
Meanwhile, the race rushed down the lowest slopes of the Col de Romme hors category (8.8 km at 8.9%), where the leaders were 15 seconds ahead of the peloton.
Reports that Barta had left the organization earlier were premature. The American went on the offensive on the lower slopes of Col de Romme at Tom Dumoulin’s corporate headquarters.
Dumoulin and Barta’s brief move came just as the initial break through the peloton, and now Dumoulin is back in front as a component of a new break, with Sivakov, Bardet, Pogacar, Lutsenko, Alos angelesphilippe, Array Kuss and David De los angeles Cruz ( UAE Team Emirates).
This eight-man move has a 30-moment lead over the organizing moment on the road, race leader Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ) and Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) momentum.

Although this more sensible organization is full of dangerous men, none of them have a minute to lead the overall Pinot ranking. The best classified rider of the 8 leaders is Tadej Pogacar, who on 1:03 at Pinot.
Julian Alaphilippe rushes to the top of Col de Romme and Alexey Lutsenko accompanies him. Sivakov, Dumoulin, Kuss, Bardet, Pogacar and De La Cruz crossed the top for about 15 seconds the two leaders. The Pinot Group, which includes Martín, Landa and Nairo Quintana, is 45 seconds away.
Correction, David of the angels Cruz first on the sane of Col de Romme, before Alos angelesphilippe and Lutsenko shortly escaped for the rest of the break on the other side. The 8 leaders are back combined on the descent down the slope, but their lead over the Pinot-Martin-Landa-Quintana organization is reduced to 20 seconds.

Unfortunately, we still have a long wait for live TV images of the current scene, so the data is incomplete at this early stage. Suffice it to say, we are possibly missing the gist of the most exciting day on the revised ScheduleArray.
The front organization would have passed 23 runners on the descent of Col de Romme, with Pinot, Landa and Martin among those who crossed. Nairo Quintana, however, seems to be absent.
At the foot of Col de los Angeles Colombière, 23 runners sped 40 seconds ahead on the ground:
Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana), Alexey Lutsenko (Astana), Hugh Carthy (EF Pro Cycling), Daniel Martinez (EF Pro Cycling), Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe), Jonathan Castroviejo (Ineos), Pavel Sivakov (Ineos), Thibaut Pinot (Groupama-FDJ), Sebastien Reichenbach (Groupama-FDJ), Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep), Tom Dumoulin (Jumbo-Visma), Sepp Kuss (Jumbo-Visma), Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), David De La Cruz (UAE Team Emirates), Romain Bardet (AG2R La Mondiale), Alejandro Valverde (Movistar), Enric Mas (Movistar), Marc Hirschi (Sunweb), Warren Barguil (Arkea-Samsic), Mikel Landa (Bahrain-McLaren), Guillaume Martin (Cofidis), Krists Neilands (Israel Start-Up Nation).
Category 1 Col de los Angeles Colombière is 7.5 km at 8.5%. This is the third of 8 climbs on today’s stage.
Pavel Sivakov (Ineos) and Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-QuickStep) attacked at the front of the race. Based on so many Dauphine finals in years, this award has been relentless.

Sivakov and Alaphilippe are approaching the top of the Col de la Colombière with a lead of 15 seconds over Pinot et al. From the summit, they drop to the intermediate sprint at Saint Jean de Sixt, and then face into the category 2 haul to the Col des Aravis.
Sivakov led Alaphilippe over Colombière, while De La Cruz led the Pinot organization past the same point 15 seconds later.
A reminder of the five remaining climbs on today’s menu, adding the arrival to the most sensible one in Megève:
km85 – Col des Aravis (10.1 km at 5.1%), Category 2
km98.5 – Côte de los angeles Frassette (2km at 6.1%), Category 4
km129 – Côte de Domancy (2.5 km at 9.4%), 2

km153.5 – Ascent to Altiport (9 km at 4.6%), 2
It was another dramatic day at the Critérium du Dauphiné and we can expect more twists and turns in the last 90 kilometers or so this afternoon. The day started with the news that race leader Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) had withdrawn from the race before the race started due to injuries that he suffered a fall at level four. Since then, manager Richard Plugge said Roglic was withdrawn as a precaution. “I don’t think this will interrupt Primoz’s Tour preparation, in fact I hope not,” Plugge said, although he is more cautious with Steven Kruijswijk’s clients to participate in the Tour. “He had a dislocated shoulder and a lot of rashes. The shoulder is back, but the rash is really bad. The next day. These are the decisive days to see how he progresses from his injuries first.”
For its part, the CPA demonstrated that the peloton had neutralized the opening of the decline in today’s level to protest against the state of the descent of Col de Plan Bois on Saturday. Interestingly, the official ASO thread saw no compatibility to mention the runners’ protest.
Back in the race, Alos angelesphilippe and Sivakov extend their merit in the descent of the Col de los Angeles Colombière. They now have 50 seconds on hand in the 21 hunter organization that includes Pinot, Martin and Landa.
Sivakov the day just over 3 minutes at Pinot, so Ineos’s driving force is not an imminent risk to his de facto advantage. Pinot is part of an organization with the highest immediate risks, mainly Guillaume Martin, Mikel Landa, Daniel Martinez and Miguel Angel Lopez.
The stage adjusts minute by minute. Mikel Landa has lost contact with the Pinot organization at the foot of Col des Aravis. The Basque is reportedly suffering from cramps and doesn’t look promising to his clients for an overall ending.
In the intermediate race at Saint-Jean de Sixt, Sivakov and Alaphilippe had a 1:10 lead over the Pinot group, led by Van Aert on the other side of the line.
Sivakov and Alaphilippe maintain their 1:10 lead over the Pinot organization in the Col des Aravis (10.1 km to 5.1%). It seems, by the way, that Nairo Quintana made his way into the Pinot organization after he disappeared, but Mikel Landa drags more mountain up the mountain.

Mikel Landa’s GC challenge stopped at the Aravis, where he was nearly four minutes ahead of the leaders. Hugh Carthy and Krists Neilands were also surpassed through Pinot. We have had conflicting reports on nairo Quintana’s whereabouts, but the official thread does not place him in the Pinot group. We have clearer data once live TV photographs are available.
Alos angelesphilippe led Sivakov to the Aravis, and the leading duo descended to La Giettaz before climbing with the four Cote de los Angeles Frassette (2 km to 6.1%).
There are four climbs remaining this afternoon:

David of the angels Cruz led the Pinot organization to the Aravis Pass, which promises him the name of king of the mountains in the Dauphine.
Alos angelesphilippe and Sivakov extended their leadership to 1:30 a.m. in the Pinot organization as they faced Cote from the Angels Frassette.
The seemingly indefatigable Wout van Aert sets the speed for the Pinot group. Jumbo-Visma has Sepp Kuss and Tom Dumoulin in this group, which is 1:30 am in Sivakov and Alaphilippe.

Sivakov and Alaphilippe are on top of the Frassette and pedaling towards the last 3 climbs of the day. The Côte de Domancy has 24.5 km to go, followed by the Côte de Cordon and then the last until Megève.
The main points are the following:
km129 – Côte de Domancy (2.5 km at 9.4%), 2
km138 – Côte de Cordon (4.6 km at 8.2%), Category 2
km153.5 – Montée de l’Altiport (9km at 4.6%), Category 2
Reichenbach and Van Aert’s speed on the Pinot is making inroads into the hole between Sivakov and Alaphilippe, which is now 1:06.
Alaphilippe struggled on the climbs in the early days of this Dauphine, but is pedaling very slowly here with Sivakov. It remains to be seen whether the Frenchman will repeat his GC exploits from a year ago (he has downplayed the prospect since last July), but at today’s and Milan-San Remo testing Alaphilippe will be without question. a competitive presence in September.
This award has been relentless, and Van Aert puts stress on this plateau that precedes the descent to the base of the Côte de Domancy. One can expect the Pinot-Martin organization to turn on again once the road starts to climb.

Tom Dumoulin started this Dauphine very well as the third man of the triumvirate heading to Jumbo-Visma, but he himself discovers the last man status after the withdrawal of Roglic and Kruijswijk. It remains to be seen how well those men ahead of the Tour, however, the latter is compelling proof of Dumoulin’s ability to maintain speed after spending more than a year on the sidelines due to injury, illness and COVID-19. season break. Dumoulin is rarely an overall risk here, however it is unclear whether he or Sepp Kuss will be the Jumbo-Visma anointed man to chase the tier win at Megeve. Van Aert, in any case, is the designated guy to paint on your behalf before the climb begins again.
Pavel Sivakov crashed after the break after his wheels slipped him as he followed Alaphilippe through a quick turn. The Russian descends heavily but returns to his motorcycle almost immediately. His shirt and shorts are ripped and he’s cut and bruised, but he continues the race and tries to get back on Alaphilippe.

Tom Dumoulin finished the Dauphine strong, he told NOS that he had no legs to compete for the level victory in the final: “I had such difficult days in a row. Array, I’ve done the last 15 kilometers, but Sepp is a wonderful guy to finish. “

“I’ve suffered for 8 days, Array,” Dumoulin said of his times at the Tour de l’Ain and the Dauphine. “It was very difficult. And then I will move on to Nice a few days before. of the Tour. “
