At a time when everyone is in favor of low prices, a strategy of seeking reduced prices is gaining momentum on TikTok: hidden liquidations.
“Hidden clearance” refers to when an item has a price listed at the store, but when that price is verified on the store’s app, it’s significantly lower. This is most commonly discussed regarding Walmart; one user claimed they found a $60 chair for just $9, while another found diapers that were originally over $20 listed for less than $6.
Now, the history of hidden customs clearance has sparked discussions on the platform. In a video with more than 845,000 views on Friday, TikTok user Emir (@extremewalmartclearance) searches for what he describes as “penny items” at Walmart.
These items ended up being hairspray and an Apple Magic Keyboard. The hairspray is on the shelf for just over $18, but when Emir scans the item on the Walmart app, it rings up as just $0.03. Similarly, the Apple Magic Keyboard, which is available on Walmart’s site for $99, is being sold for $9.
“There’s no magic here, just permission,” the TikToker writes in a text overlaid on the video as he watches it. The checkout procedure confirms that the costs are as low as they appear on the Walmart app.
In the comments section, some users verified that they were able to score these or similar deals.
“I once discovered a chalkboard calendar for 25 cents. Have a great day,” one commenter said.
“Yes, a friend of mine paid 3 cents taxi for the first hairspray,” added another. “Yesterday he bought everything that was on the market. “
“I bought the hairspray yesterday! 3 cents! It’s hidden on the most practical shelf!” exclaimed a third.
That said, some users claimed that they were unable to redeem those deals at their local Walmart, or that their local Walmart refused to place the parts in their online store.
“This won’t work, tried 1 year on a 4 wheel battery operated jeep for kids, it was .01,” alleged a user. “I tried to go thru self check out they wudnt let me leave w/ it.”
“Dude, you’re in luck! My Walmart probably wouldn’t sell any Array03 items,” he offered for a moment. “The login is blocked or something and a worker has to log in. Then they take the object.
“Like someone who used to paint at Walmart, other people would be disappointed if we didn’t adjust prices,” another TikToker said. “Please don’t get mad at the staff – they are literally doing their homework and respecting policy. “
The Daily Dot reached out to Walmart via its media relations contact form, and Emir via email.
