City Leaders Ask Citizens What to Build on 102 Empty Acres in South Sacramento

SACRAMENTO — Efforts are underway to expand a piece of land in South Sacramento that has been vacant for more than two years.

The city purchased the 102 acres south of Meadowview Road for more than $12 million and plans to build a parking lot for those living in their cars.

It has been unused for years, but the city still does not have a concrete plan for the 102-acre site.

Today, city leaders approach citizens to ask them what they see built here.

“The network told me we were looking for anything that could be a catalyst for South Sacramento,” council member Mai Vang said.

The city council bought the assets two and a half years ago, so no expansion has been made.

“It takes time to research all of this and a lot of monetary research to figure out how to make this work,” said lead planner Elizabeth Boyd.

One concept is to build a youth sports complex, but that could cost more than $120 million.

“For any progress to happen, a public-private partnership will be critical,” Vang said.

Others would like to see new houses.

Research found that this isn’t a smart location for a giant hotel or grocery store.

“We’re going to take a look at everything that’s available, what we can bring to the table and that would be exciting,” Boyd said.

Whichever one is chosen, it will be years before it is built.

Ideas from Wednesday’s meeting, as well as those submitted through an online survey, will be presented to the City Council in October.
