The race for supremacy in lunar exploration between India and China has reached new heights, as the Indian Rover Chandrayaan-3 recently made a historic landing near the lunar South Pole. However, the success sparked a debate between the two giants of the area, with a leading Chinese scientist wondering about the importance of India’s success.
Ouyang Ziyuan, considered the pioneer of China’s lunar exploration program, expressed skepticism when speaking to China’s Science Times newspaper about allegations about the Chandrayaan-3 moon landing, the Taipei Times reported.
He says the Indian rover’s landing site, located at 69 degrees south latitude, is significantly below the lunar South Pole, which lies between 88. 5 and 90 degrees. In essence, he argues that India’s success, while remarkable, does not in fact constitute a polar landing.
When comparing the lunar coordinates with their terrestrial counterparts, it becomes obvious that 69 degrees south of the Moon is analogous to our planet’s Antarctic Circle, which is much farther from the South Pole.
Ouyang Ziyuan said: “This is not true. The landing site of Chandrayaan-3 is not at the lunar South Pole, nor in the lunar South Pole region, nor in the vicinity of the lunar South Pole region. “More issues point out that Chandrayaan-3 is located about 619 kilometers from the polar region.

So far, the Indian area firm has responded to those comments, leaving the simmering controversy in the background.
After the landing of Chandrayaan-3, the Chinese Communist Party’s Global Times quoted Pang Zhihao, a prominent Beijing-based expert, praising China’s technological prowess in the field of lunar exploration.
China’s space program “has been able to send orbiters and landers into Earth-Moon orbit since the launch of Chang’e-2 in 2010, a maneuver India has yet to perform given the limited capability of its launchers,” he said. “The engine used in China is also much more advanced,” he added.
However, it should be noted that the landing of Chandrayaan-3 set a remarkable precedent by venturing much farther south from the Moon than any previous spacecraft.
Russia’s recent attempt to land near the lunar south pole ended in failure when its spacecraft crashed into the lunar surface. China’s Chang’e Four probe, the first to land on the face of the Moon, landed forty-five degrees south in 2019. while NASA’s unmanned probe, Surveyor 7, landed about four degrees south in 1968.
