Scuderia Ferrari marked the return of the Chinese Grand Prix to the calendar with a fourth and fifth place thanks to Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.

On the positive side, a total of 31 bag problems, adding those of the Sprint Race, the second highest overall score behind Red Bull. It was about trying to recover positions after a difficult qualifying, but for the first time this season. , neither driver made it to the podium.

Strategy and management. From 6th to 7th position on the grid, the strategy aimed to recover Charles and Carlos without getting stuck in a DRS train. But neither of them had a smart start, either because they were outplayed by George Russell and that confused things even more. Leclerc controlled to move ahead of the Mercedes after nine laps, then ran at high speed on medium tyres, completing a longer stint than those around him. Carlos had a more complicated first stint and arrived on lap 17 to pass the hard riders and climb to tenth position. One of the key moments was the arrival of the virtual safety car on lap 22, when Valtteri Bottas cut into the track, followed by a real safety car phase. Charles then made his only scheduled stop for hard tire compatibility, taking some of the usual time, which promoted him to third place with Max Verstappen and Lando Norris and ahead of Sergio Pérez. Carlos also took advantage of the obstacles in the pits to climb to 5th position. At the restart, none of the Ferrari drivers could keep up with the faster cars on hard tyres, so the Monegasque had to give Perez his best. Sainz had to extend his time on the tough ones, falling one position to sixth position when Alonso overtook him. However, Fernando was on soft tires and Carlos took over when the Aston Martin had to make another obstacle, finishing fifth, his teammate.

The world championship will resume in two weeks’ time with round six in Miami, the last race before the start of the European leg of the season.

Charles Leclerc: We’re not entirely happy with our team’s result today. We want to focus on two things before we leave Shanghai: one is our preparation for qualifying and the other is our speed on the hard courts, which is our biggest challenge today. Strategy and functionality were forged down to the protection car, but after that we all had the same strategy and it was a bit more difficult for us to gain speed on the hard tyres.

What will be key are the innovations to come, as they will set the direction we will take for next season.

Carlos Sainz: “This weekend has been a challenging race on a tricky track for us. The first few corners were far from ideal and with the traffic we had to pit early to switch to the hard tyres. A few laps later, under the protection car, I stayed on that tyre and made it all the way to the finish fifth.

In any case, in general we have had a worse time than expected and today’s result is not what we wanted. We will review everything before moving on to Miami, where I am sure we can return to the form shown last weekends.

Fred Vasseur, Team Principal: I don’t know if we expected more in terms of qualifying today, given our grid positions. However, I expected more in terms of speed than what we showed in the race. Now we want to understand why, especially on the Hards, and the Miami time, both in qualifying and in the race, because it’s all very close at the moment, with hundredths of a second at the moment making a big difference. We had put the two drivers on a scoresheet. of two. Charles did a good job of prolonging his time on the media, but when the virtual safety car was cancelled, we opted for a single stop, hoping we could fight for a podium.

Unfortunately, Carlos had stopped just before the Safety Car and therefore had to go through a single lock as well. This naturally forced him to be a bit conservative in the latter part of the race, but he still got the most productive result imaginable today. .
