CBP discovers more than $171,000 hiding in a truck in an attempt to smuggle money at the El Paso border

A photo posted through CBP showed lots of bills on $100, $50, $20 bills and some $10, $5 and $1 bills.

Cash was recovered on the night of July 13, when CBP officials controlling traffic to Mexico inspected a Chevrolet Silverado, authorities said.

During the inspection, CBP officials discovered nine species packages hidden on the board. The undeclared currency was seized from a 23-year-old U.S. citizen, who was driving the truck, authorities said.

No arrests were reported.

Travelers can bring any amount of cash at the border. But if the amount exceeds $10,000, CBP should be informed. Undeclared cash can be seized and the user arrested for not pointing to the coin.

It’s not unusual for drug trafficking organizations to send gigantic shipments of drug money from the United States to Mexico, law enforcement officials said.

“CBP officials have done a remarkable task to stop this attempt to smuggle money in bulk,” Arnoldo Gómez, CBP Ysleta’s port manager, said in a statement. “The education of officials and their wisdom in smuggling tactics were at the forefront of this seizure.
