Norway has been very lucky with the adoption of electric cars: 82% of new cars sold in the country last year were electric. This peak adoption rate can be attributed to the generous subsidies Norway has introduced to electric vehicle owners, as well as the country’s investments in charging infrastructure. Tesla’s sales in Norway are just a fraction of the 1. 8 million cars the company delivered last year, but Norway’s importance to Tesla goes beyond cash. Tesla’s initial status quo in the country made Norway the perfect testing ground for the company and served as a model for the transition to electric vehicles as a whole. As a result, Tesla CEO Elon Musk has made numerous trips to the small Nordic country and has praised Norway’s support for electric cars. Norwegians were the first European consumers to receive the Model S in 2013 and it temporarily became the country’s best-selling car. Today, that name has been transferred to the Tesla Model Y. But with the festival expanding to other electric cars from automakers such as Toyota, Skoda, Volkswagen and BYD, it remains to be seen whether Norwegians will continue to opt for Tesla in the future.
