Careful, Gaz is in a roaring position: Ablett’s difficult workouts before AFL returns

The Cats posted footage on Monday of Ablett with Premier Cat colleague Andrew Mackie at GMHBA Stadium, and they’re testing it.

Ablett noticed that he was running at a full pace, crashing into the bags and scoring goals on both sides of his body.

“It can obviously be tricky to exercise alone, but Mack has been in 95% of the sessions,” Ablett told the club’s website.

“It’s smart to know who has that smart fortune and who knows what it takes to do it in the box and make my body feel smart.

“I feel smart and I have no doubt that once I leave this quarantine center, I will be able to go.”

Ablett has not played an AFL game since the seventh circular after leaving the Geelong bubble to return to his family. He and his wife Jordan revealed that their son Levi had been diagnosed with a rare and degenerative disease.

But the 352-game veteran, who is in the middle of his nineteenth and final AFL season, will fly to Queensland on Tuesday with Jordan and Levi.

Despite Ablett’s absence, the Cats have climbed the AFL ladder in recent times and their flag opportunities before the final.

Ablett said one of the main reasons for his team’s recent improvement is the way he led the game against the middle without taking “stupid risks” as well as his toughness around the ball.

“I think our tension was good. We’ve had a lot of guys who came here and just did their part, a lot of young guys, which shows the intensity of our team,” he said.

“As good as it was to meet my family, I’m looking forward to riding with Jordan and Levi, completing our two weeks in quarantine, and then joining the boys.

“I hope I can go out and play smart football and, despite everything, have a chance to win this position as prime minister.”
