Car Recalls: Models with the Lowest Projected Recall Rates, New Study Finds

The term “recall,” as applied to automobiles, can make any customer cringe. Perhaps it is the idea of making an unscheduled stopover at the dealership. Or, even more worryingly, the idea that your vehicle has a serious protection problem. Regardless of the initial reaction, no car owner needs to know that their vehicle is part of a recall. But with more than three hundred recalls involving more than 35 million cars in 2023 alone, there is a chance that your car will be recalled to deal with a protection issue.

To help consumers reduce the risk of recalls, iSeeCars analyzed recall data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for vehicles from design years 2015 to 2024. The number of campaigns added and projected during a Expected useful life of 30 years. The projections take into account the automaker’s recall trend and the timing of each recall campaign. You can see the full list of highest and lowest recalled cars, as well as other key points about the methodology, at iSeeCars. com.

Among the findings is the unforeseen importance of electric cars, which feature highest on the list of recalled cars, with six of the seven recalled cars being electric cars. This includes all four Teslas, as well as Porsche’s Taycan (first) and the Lucid Air. (in 5th place). On the list of the least remembered, the Mini Cabriolet occupies first place, followed by four Lexus models, the Audi TT RS, the Mazda Miata and three Mercedes-Benz cars that complete the top 10.

To put those figures into context, the average car deserves to have 3. 2 recalls in its 30-year lifespan, while the Porsche Taycan deserves to have 70. 7 and the Mini Cabriolet 0. 2. Another attractive detail was the influence of Over-The-Air, or “OTA” Reminders, which can be done – wirelessly – with the car parked, so they do not require a stopover at a dealership or service center.

When OTAs were not included in the recall numbers, all 4 Teslas fell off the list of the top 2 five recalled cars, as did the Rivian R1S. The Lucid Air went from number five to number 2 five, making it slightly to the list. Unfortunately for the Porsche Taycan, it remained in the top position, with 70. 7 recalls (apparently, there were no OTA recalls for the Taycan). While EV enthusiasts (and especially Tesla) like to act like the OTA is reminding them to “don’t count,” they still constitute an NHTSA protective factor until they are resolved. So, while arguably easier for owners to handle, OTA callbacks are still a security factor before the OTA upgrade.

The Mini Cabriolet is expected to be the least recalled car on the market, with 0. 2 over its useful life.

Car buyers deserve to understand that any mass-produced item, including cars, is subject to production diversifications that require a post-purchase recall. One or two, or even 3. 2 recalls are expected over the life of a car. But if necessary to improve your chances of avoiding recall issues (and protection issues), you should use the cars on the list of minimum recalls and avoid the cars on the list of maximum recalls.
