Will Buick had been nominated for the role, Shepherd will be on board in Group 1.

Delighted Shepherd, who won a £100,000 hat-trick at Ascot with a hole in his head last month, said: “I took him to the cheques on Monday and he inspired me again as on the track he overtakes his chequered horse and then says: ‘I’ve done enough.

“He hasn’t done anything wrong so far and I like the way he went about his business at Ascot.

“He feels very calm, but he starts painting when asked.

“There are no limits to him. They continue to progress and have already earned the right to be in Group 1.

“I’ve sat on some of the thousands like Phoenix Of Spain, but Quddwah would be the one I’ve sat on so far. ”

Shepherd’s season may have gone down smoothly after he fell victim to Ambiente Friendly in favor of Rab Havlin.

The middle-distance star formed by James Fanshawe traveled like a dream to the last stages of the most prestigious flat race in the world.

But he had no more luck against City Of Troy, winner by two and three-quarters of a length.

Now 6-1 for Great Voltigeur and 8-1 for Juddmonte, either in York later this month, Ambiente Friendly finished third in the Irish Derby, behind Havlin.

The Crisfords’ confidence in Shepherd came when it was revealed that Cheveley Park Stud was considering a new jockey for Inspiral.

Jacques Le Marois’ double-winning has twice raced through Kieran Shoemark this season.

He looked like he needed the race at Lockinge, which Havlin beat the public 22-1, but could not come close to Auguste Rodin in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes.

Chris Richardson, managing director of Cheveley Park Stud, said: “We are looking at who might already be at Deauville. This has not yet been finalised. “
