Callum Ilott will drive the No. 6 Chevrolet Arrow McLaren for the next two weeks after completing 13th place in the season-opening St. Petersburg Grand Prix in position of the injured David Malukas.
The team announced Thursday that Ilott will compete on March 18 at Barber Motorsports Park and then compete in the March 22-24 $1 Million Challenge exhibition race weekend at the Thermal Club in Southern California.
Ilott competes full-time in the World Endurance Championship and has a schedule that coincides with the next IndyCar race, the Long Beach Grand Prix, on April 21. Malukas is expected to recover from wrist surgery.
Arrow McLaren asked Ilott to check out its cars in February after Malukas was injured and announced him as a driver for St. John’s. John’s. Pete last week. Ilott, who lost his IndyCar career after competing full-time from 2022 to 2023 in the series, said he could overlook his WEC calendar as a replacement.
“I think the WEC is the priority for me, and it will be for the near future,” he said on March 5. “Of course, if they want to have me and what’s needed is me, then of course I’m open to doing that. We’ll have to see what happens on that front. But I’m praying that David won’t be because you need to be in the car and work with your team and hopefully he’ll get in the car very soon because it’s very tricky to sit and watch, something I wouldn’t wish on anyone, especially with a new team.
