Ferrari has announced it will be supplying the Cadillac Formula 1 team with power units from the 2026 season, subject to approval of its entry.
General Motors has reached an initial agreement with Formula One management to bring a team under the Cadillac name to the grid from 2026, with its own factory power unit expected to be ready for the 2028 season.
1978 world champion Mario Andretti, who will take on a non-executive role on Cadillac’s board when he enters Formula 1, recently showed Ferrari a “preference” for a visiting powertrain deal, and this has now been demonstrated through the Italian marque.
Fred Vasseur, Ferrari team principal, said: “It is wonderful to see the commitment of the American team, supported through one of the most reputable brands in the automotive industry, at a time when Formula 1 is gaining popularity in the United States. Joined.
“We are delighted therefore that we will be supplying the team with our power unit and gearbox as the basis of this technical collaboration.
“It means we will continue to have two “customer teams” in the championship with all the benefits this brings in terms of technical development within Ferrari.”
The most recent key appointment at Cadillac came with the arrival of former Manor Marussia boss Graeme Lowdon as team principal, with recruitment underway in positions across the team as they get set to become the 11th team on the Formula 1 grid.
Lowdon added of the new agreement: “We are very pleased to partner with Ferrari as a powertrain and gearbox supplier for our Cadillac team, bringing two notable heritages.
“Choosing the right powertrain is crucial and we accept this as true to Ferrari’s passion, excellence and exceptional capabilities. “
Cadillac plans to provisionally enter Formula 1 in 2026 with a visitor agreement, with a view to building its own factory powertrains in the future.
Andretti showed that there is a “goal” to have his own operating force unit until the 2028 season, that this away agreement with Ferrari will last at least two years, before the GM force arrives on the Formula 1 grid.
