BYD’s New Luxury Sedan Hits Showrooms to Challenge Tesla and Porsche

Can BYD challenge Porsche, Mercedes and Tesla? With the launch of its new “million yuan” ($140,000) Yangwang U7 later this year, BYD hopes to achieve this. Ahead of its official launch later this year, BYD’s new luxury electric sedan will hit dealerships in China.

After the launch of Yangwang last year, the BYD luxury logo is already generating buzz. Yangwang brought his first vehicle, the U8 SUV, last September.

The luxury SUV, rival to the Range Rover Defender and the Mercedes G-Class, at $150,000 (RMB 1,098,000).

BYD also unveiled its first electric supercar, the Yangwang U9, earlier this year. With almost 1,300 HP, this electric supercar can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 2. 36 seconds. It’s faster than a Ferrari SF90 Stradale and a Buggati Chiron.

The Yangwang U9 was spotted racing at the Nürburgring last month, standing out for its sleek design and competitive strength (you can watch the video here).

Meanwhile, Yangwang is adding electric style to its luxury lineup. The U7, BYD’s first luxury sedan under the Yangwang brand, hits showrooms in China.

Based on the same e4 platform as the U9 sports car, the U7 is supplied with 4 electric motors that generate more than 1,300 HP in total. Powered by a 135. 5 kWh Blade battery, the U7 achieves a CLTC range of up to 800 km.

With its new DiSus-Z suspension, the electric sedan features a smoother, more efficient ride (It can also do dance moves).

Several design influences from the U9 can be seen, adding headlights and a LiDAR on the roof. Its sporty and aerodynamic design allows an ultra-low drag coefficient of 0. 195 Cd. In comparison, the Tesla Model S has a drag coefficient of 0. 208.

BYD’s new luxury sedan will rival the Tesla Model S, Porsche Taycan and others in its segment.

At 5,265 mm long, 1,998 mm wide and 1,517 mm high, the Yangwang is longer and taller than the Taycan (4,963 mm long, 1,966 mm wide and 1,381 mm high) and the Model S (4,980 mm long, 1,964 mm wide and 1,440 mm high).

BYD will officially launch the Yangwang U7 later this year, as it expands into new segments such as pickup trucks, supercars, and midsize SUVs.

A truly lovely thing. The luxury segment is brutal, so I’m not sure they’re going to succeed, but 10 for the effort.

(If ALL luxury brands, 7 Series, Lexus LS, Audi A8, S elegance make a profit)

Although BYD overtook Tesla as the world’s best-selling electric vehicle in the second quarter, new studies suggest it could regain the name by the end of the year.

The automaker on Monday unveiled the 2025 Dolphin EV with a larger battery for greater range. It is one of their best-selling models, at $13,700 (RMB 99,800).

BYD also signed a deal this week to build a $1 billion electric vehicle plant in Turkey as part of the brand’s expansion.
