BYD targets Porsche, luxury cars with its new 1,000 hp Denza Z9 GT

China’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer will capture a percentage of the premium market with its new flagship, the GT. The Denza Z9 GT is expected to compete with luxury car manufacturers such as Porsche and BMW. As BYD’s electric vehicle launch frenzy continues, it will make its official debut in less than two weeks.

Denza was formed in 2010 as a 50/50 joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz. In 2022, BYD increased its control with a 90% stake.

After announcing in 2023 its goal of launching eight new cars on the market by 2026, there are three on sale: the D9 MPV and two SUVs, the N7 and N8.

Next up is Denza’s flagship GT. Denza announced that the Z9 GT will make its official debut on August 20, 2024. Pre-sales will begin that day and deliveries are expected until the end of the year.

BYD’s Denza logo unveiled the Z9 GT at the Beijing Motor Show in April. Powered by BYD’s new e-Platform 3. 0, the flagship electric GT includes 3 motors with approximately 1,000 hp. All of this forces acceleration from 0 to 100 km (0 to 62 mph). /h) runs in less than 3 seconds.

At 5,180 mm long, 1,990 mm wide and 1,500 mm high, the new Denza Z9 GT is equivalent to a Porsche Panamera GTS (5,053 mm long, 1,937 mm wide, 1,417 mm high).

The interior is expected to come with a three-screen setup with individual displays for the driver, infotainment and passengers, similar to that of the N7.

Denza has announced that Z9 GT models are now arriving at dealerships in preparation for their upcoming launch. Pre-sale prices and official specifications are expected on August 20.

The arrival of the Denza Z9 GT comes amid BYD’s electric vehicle launch frenzy. On Thursday, the automaker unveiled the updated 2025 Seal EV, BYD’s answer to the Tesla Model 3, with added LiDAR and other features.

With a starting price of less than $25,000, BYD’s new Seal costs $10,000 less than the Model 3 in China. Will the Denza Z9 GT compete with the Model S? The Tesla Model S starts at $95,900 (684,900 yuan) in China.

The 1,020 hp triple-motor Tesla Model S Plaid starts at $113,700 (814,900) in China. It will be appealing to see how the value of BYD’s new flagship, the GT, stacks up. Check back soon for more details.
