My children can get in and out of each and every vehicle I check and climb infrequently through them, however, for apparent reasons, they are not actually interested in the verification and evaluation process. A recent invitation from Moose Toys replaced all that, and to my surprise, my two daughters went from dolls to toy cars in the blink of an eye. Boom City Racers are a colorful collection of miniature cars that can be inserted from a plastic tube with a traction cable. They explode in some pieces and have an effect on furniture or walls, and are also a perfect street toy. This is what makes them great.
Unlike Hot Wheels, whose designs largely adhere to genuine car models, Boom City Racers are natural fantasy. The designs used for Boom City cars vary depending on your driver’s “equipment”. The fundamental shape is repeated several times in the catalog, but the color and wheels change.
None of that mattered to my kids who, upon figuring out how to launch them at top speed, had them rolling up and down the street for hours on end. It should be said that the cars roll much better on a smooth surface, such as hardwood or tile, but rough concrete makes for a fun time, too.
The cars launch from a large red plastic tube, and are powered by yanking the pull cord. My seven-year-old daughter figured out the process immediately, but my nearly four-year-old daughter needed help threading the pull cord back through the car to try again. It’s not a difficult process, but kids on the lower end of the 4+ age suggestion for the cars may need a little extra guidance.
The cars come packaged in their launch tubes, which means that you don’t know which car you’re getting before you open it. This was a slight disappointment for me, as I grew up in the Hot Wheels era, where I’d go to the store and obsess over the cars behind their plastic-bubbled packaging on the shelf. It’s not all that surprising that Boom City’s parent company, Moose Toys, took this approach, because several of the other toys my girls play with have the same packaging. It’s neat for the first few that you buy, because you’re getting new and exciting toys each time, but after that you can end up getting duplicates. There’s nothing wrong with the mystery bag approach, but it makes collecting the entire set a bit more difficult. The good news is that they’re not that expensive, starting at around $5.99.
