Home ‘News’ BMW will link CO2 emissions to obtaining contracts with suppliers
July 28, 2020/2 minutes of reading
In a rather unexpected move, BMW yesterday issued a very sharp fit in the way it does business. The German logo was already one of the most environmentally friendly car manufacturers, but yesterday’s announcement takes things to another point. One of the key adjustments that will occur in the coming months reaches another plane related to the suppliers used by BMW and the pollutant point of its factories.
According to BMW, this is a step because, with the expansion we all expect from electric mobility, much more attention will have to be paid to how portions are made, not to the amount of car emissions. An example would be the intensive battery manufacturing procedure. BMW estimates that, without corrective action, the expansion consistent with the percentage of electrified cars would mean that CO2 emissions consistent with the vehicle in the BMW Group source chain would accumulate for more than a third by 2030.
Therefore, to avoid not only this, but also to reduce CO2 emissions in general, BMW has decided to describe a supplier’s carbon footprint as a component of its decision-making criteria in its procurement processes. Basically, BMW will decide and paint only with the most effective suppliers. This covers approximately 12,000 corporations worldwide, from corporations that lately get everything from hardware and vehicle factors to tools.
“CO2 wants to be reduced in partnership between brands and suppliers. If you need to convince partners, it must be a role model. As a leader in sustainable development, what we say means a lot to our suppliers, so we move forward with our reputation in this regard,” Zipse said. “Our purpose is to ensure the highest chain of sustainable sources in the industry.” To achieve this, BMW Group is not only focusing on the top point of its Tier 1 suppliers, but also seeks to pin on the issue of sustainability in its home chain.
To this end, some measures have already been implemented. As we reported not long ago, BMW has already agreed with its mobile battery suppliers that the energy used to manufacture them will come only from green sources. This will save a total of about ten million tons of CO2 over the next ten years. This is the amount of CO2 emitted by a city of more than one million people, such as Munich, each year.
