BMW assembles battery modules from cells through external suppliers in a highly automated process.
BERLIN – BMW is expanding its German production capacity for vehicle components.
The manufacturer will charge its Leipzig plant as a production of modules for high voltage batteries in BMW electrified vehicles.
On Wednesday, BMW announced that it would invest more than one hundred million euros ($117 million) until 2022 in battery production in Leipzig. BMW builds the battery-powered i3 sedán at the factory.
BMW’s plant in Dingolfing, Bavaria, is lately the car manufacturer’s battery component plant in Germany. Outside Germany, Spartanburg plants in the United States and Shenyang in China manufacture drum parts.
Plants gather cell battery modules through external suppliers.
The automobile manufacturer aims to put 25 electrified cars into circulation until 2023, some of which will be fully electric models.
By 2021, one in four BMW Group cars sold in Europe is expected to be equipped with propulsion, the company said, and by 2025 it will be one in three and one in two until 2030.
