BMW has admitted for the first time that it is a gateway to the MotoGP World Championship as the sport introduces its next wave of regulatory changes.
Rumours have emerged in recent weeks that the German manufacturer will sign for Ducati, Honda and Aprilia in the coming years following an overhaul of its control structure.
Earlier this month, he announced that BMW M Motorsport boss Sven Blusch, who engineered the company’s commitment to Formula E and the return of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, would oversee the BMW Motorrad Motorsport division, with former boss Marc Bongers concentrating on his existing WorldSBK efforts.
Generating the hypothesis that this would be part of a wider plan to expand a new MotoGP machine, BMW Motorrad boss Markus Fasch told Motorsport. com that he is in fact comparing a move to the premier class.
“2027 may be the best time to worry about MotoGP because that’s when new regulations will be introduced,” he said. “We are in contact with Dorna and we are talking about the regulations. “
“That’s part of our assessment. The 2027 season would be a good time to start. But that doesn’t force us to make a decision. “
BMW, which has a relationship with MotoGP through its official protection source and medical cars, has long been courted through Dorna to enter the box as a racing competitor.
But while BMW has rejected suggestions that it might be involved, the upgrade to the control design could affect its long-term plans.
“The key to a resolution is to convince other people of the idea. Strategic research is needed. Funding is just one aspect. Branding is another. If the research is compelling and has internal support, the resolution does not depend on who the CEO is of BMW Motorrad.
“The most important aspect is the logo. MotoGP is the logo and global reach. That’s why companies are participating. The tech movement is one aspect, but it’s only the second most important aspect. “
Although BMW has competed in the fashionable era of MotoGP, it has been competing in WorldSBK since 2010. He recently took his first wins in WorldSBK elegance since 2021 with Toprak Razgatlioglu completing the one-two finish in Catalonia.
