The first eDrive zones will be established in the cities of London and Birmingham. For example, BMW Group is the first automotive conglomerate to launch the generation of GPS geofencing in designated UK spaces. BMW eDrive Zones is in fact an exclusive formula in the automotive industry, which promotes emission-free driving in the city and aims to increase the massive appeal of plug-in and battery hybrid electric vehicles.

The feature is already activated in some BMW PHEV cars and can now be used in London. It has been mapped to suit the geographic spaces that cover the so-called TFL/ ULEZ (Ultra Low Emissions Zone) Congestion Rate in the busy UK capital.

Birmingham will have to wait a little longer to fully enjoy the benefits of BMW eDrive Zones. Starting in 2021, the generation will be in the domain that covers the city’s planned blank air zone, which will be implemented next year.

In the UK, the eDrive Zones generation will be available for the following plug-in hybrid models: 330th, 530th, X5 xDrive45e, 745th, and more PHEV will be added in due course. The function can be configured seamlessly in the car, as it will be taken as a loose OTA update, in particular for the BMW 7.0 operating system interface.

As you may already know, BMW eDrive zones allow Bavarian PHVEs to be transferred to a purely electric drive when the formula detects that the car enters the designated emission zone 0 delimited in the city. In addition, if the navigation service is activated and the steering passes through an eDrive area, this will save the battery strength of the car for later use in that area.

“This is the flexibility that consumers have as they transition to electric mobility,” said Pieter Nota, a board member of BMW AG for consumers, brands and sales, commenting on the UK launch of BMW eDrive Zones.

“A plug-in hybrid vehicle combines the most productive of both worlds: emission-free urban driving and long-distance capabilities. We urge governments to prioritize plug-in hybrid cars to inspire consumers to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle. Generation BMW eDrive Zones is helping consumers drive non-emissions in London and Birmingham. Improves air quality in cities and reduces operating prices for drivers. It’s beneficial to everyone,” Added Note.

We recall that BMW eDrive Zones is the product of an extensive 2018 in the Netherlands. The Dutch pilot allocation showed that 90% of routes travelled in zero-emission zones through participants were carried out purely electric.

In addition, as of 2020, the generation is gradually joining no fewer than 80 major cities in Central and Western Europe.
