Home ‘News’ BMW brev’te a joystick to update the steering wheel of self-driving cars
July 29, 2020/2 minutes of reading
In fact, the road to long-term autonomous driving will not be easy. Some automakers are even beginning to doubt that we will never get fully autonomous cars. Level five self-driving models will hardly want a guide wheel. They can take us without any help from the human occupiers. But until we get there, point four could be more plausible.
This is something that each and every one of the call-worthy automakers are running lately, adding BMW. As far as The Bavarians are concerned, a big step in this direction is expected with the launch of the BMW iNext in just over 12 months. Still, however loaded with technology, the iNext will first only offer Tier 3 autonomous driving.
Level four autonomous driving means that the car will drive only 90% of the time, but will have some kind of internal guide wheel so that human occupants can take control when needed. However, because “flying” will not be necessary most of the time, the interior of the cars must have it hidden at most. This can lead to cutting-edge tactics to create devices to drive the car, which do not necessarily resemble a wheel.
This is what was recently discovered through other i4Talk people. BMW has filed a patent on some kind of joystick that would allow it to control a car. You can clearly see a speed selector as well as a signal controller and a type of speed control button. The German description indicates that the operation of the device will be done with care and it turns out that either stick will be necessary.
And using the car with those joysticks would probably be very different from what we know now, you should realize that those devices are meant to be used sporadically and intuitively. Therefore, they deserve to be as undeniable as possible, allowing anyone to avoid a potentially harmful situation. Only time will tell which cars will actually gain advantages from this type of generation and how they will be implemented.
