To give its R18 motorcycle a physically powerful upgrade, BMW Motorrad has hired the well-known motorcycle manufacturer Roland Sands. The result? A drager edition of the brand’s signature style with the force to burn.

The unique design keeps the original two-cylinder boxer engine, the toughest ever produced with 116 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm and 91 ps at 4,750 rpm, but has largely redesigned the exterior. Sands sent all the unnecessary elements to simplify the retro-inspired model, absolutely eliminating the back end of the process. Fortunately, BMW had already created the motorcycle with a highly customizable structure.

“With an engine that is so clearly the centerpiece, I without delay had an idea about muscle cars,” Sands told Autoblog. “My circle of relatives liked to pass fast, and my father was a drag runner, so I think it made sense to bare the motorcycle to the essentials and shape it to pass fast on a direct track.

The front and rear fins have been replaced to complement the overall aesthetics of endurance racing and the same old exhaust formula has been replaced via a handmade stainless metal double megaphone version. The old R18 headlight has been preserved, but has noticed the addition of a new silver aluminum bezel, and the seat has been rebuilt from scratch. The same goes for hydraulic front brakes and clutch cylinder masters to help the nitrous formula that is resistant.

For Sands and his team, the most complicated facet of dragster design turned out to be the on-board electronic system. “It was a little experiment, but we wrote it,” Sands told the website. Although BMW has not yet published the official specifications of the new motorcycle, we know it will come with the same brakes installed on its superdrive S 1000 RR. If this is an indication, the motorcycle will offer a convincing joy ride on the track or anywhere else you can venture.
