JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Johnson City, Tennessee, was chosen as the location for the Big South Conference men’s and women’s basketball tournaments in 2025 and 2026 by the league’s General Managers Council, the convention announced Thursday.
The facility marks the league’s sixth overall neutral site for its major basketball events in the conference’s 40-year history and the first outdoor in the league’s presence.
The agreement includes a mutual insurance company for 2027.
“The Big South Conference looks forward to partnering with Johnson City to host a memorable and world-class Mountain South championship for our basketball student-athletes,” said Big South Commissioner Sherika A. Montgomery. ” Johnson City officials have made it clear that attracting a premier sporting event is a priority. The Big South believes that this partnership will showcase highly competitive basketball systems while also creating visibility for the logo in this developing region.
Located an average of 3 hours from the nine member establishments in the Deep South, Johnson City will continue to host the league’s combined tournaments that have taken place since 2022. The five Grand Sud basketball championships of 202 are scheduled from Wednesday to Sunday, March 5 and 9, at the Salle de los Angeles Liberté with a capacity for 6,500 people.
The conference’s men’s and women’s tournaments have been signature events held at the same venue 12 times: 1997-98 (Lynchburg, Va. , campus), 1999-00 (Asheville, neutral), 2001-02 (Roanoke, Va. , neutral), 2013-15 (Conway, South Carolina campus), 2022-23 (Charlotte-neutral), and 2024 (High Point, High Point University campus).
HPU will host the 2024 tournament after Charlotte’s Independence Arena declined the option to host the tournament for the third time in a row.
The last Big South independent venue convention tournaments were held in 1991-92 (men, Anderson Civic Center, South Carolina), 1993-94 (men, North Charleston Coliseum, South Carolina), 1999-00 (male and female, Asheville). .
