The Big Island Jeep Club spent Saturday picking up trash at Kamilo Beach in Ka‘u.
Sixteen Jeeps made the rough, off-road trek to the “rubbish beach” and collected 60 bags of trash including plastic, tires, buoys and Styrofoam.
Kamilo Beach is located on the southern point of the Big Island. Trash lands at the area in part because the Hawaiian archipelago acts like a comb for debris circulating in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The site may include trash originating in Hawaii.
