President Joe Biden returned to Michigan on Thursday to register members of the United Auto Workers (UAW), which last week helped his re-election campaign.
Biden was joined by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, U. S. Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-Ann Arbor), U. S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Lansing), U. S. Sen. Gary Peters (Rep. Bloomfield) and other Michigan leaders at the meeting. UAW Union Hall in Warren, Macomb County, to celebrate the union’s accomplishments over the past year and its Biden re-election campaign.
“Supporting you is the simplest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” Biden told UAW members. “The main explanation for why unions are growing, the main explanation for why the economy is growing. . . Because you are the staff of the world. »
Michigan is expected to play a key role in November’s general election, as Biden seeks to win the state again. After arriving at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township, Biden spoke to shoppers at the They Say dining venue in Harper Woods before departing for the UAW hall, where pro-Palestinian activists protested outside.
This is the second time in recent months that Biden has come to Michigan to talk with UAW members. He became the first sitting U.S. president in modern history to visit a picket line in September during a historic strike against Detroit’s “Big Three” automakers — Ford, General Motors and Stellantis.
Biden’s help to striking auto workers has not been forgotten, as UAW President Shawn Fain unveiled the union’s goals after staff went on strike for six weeks last year.
“We have a purpose now. . . We have a long-term plan and that is to keep Joe Biden as president,” Fain said. “We know who’s there for the task and we actually know who’s not. “
Biden spoke at a convention hall where 100 UAW members were banking by phone ahead of the state’s Feb. 27 primary. The Democrat said he “grew up” at General Motors because his father ran a dealership in Delaware. Fallout” never made it to his father’s kitchen table.
“Wall Street didn’t build average elegance; employees built average elegance and average elegance built the country,” Biden said. “When work is going well, everyone is fine. “
Fain announced the union’s crusade for Biden on Jan. 24 at the UAW’s biennial political convention in Washington, D. C. The union leader drew a stark comparison between Biden and former Republican Party Chairman Donald Trump.
“Rarely, as a union, do you have such a transparent selection between two candidates,” Fain said at the conference. “It’s not about who you love, it’s not about your match, it’s not about that age thing. This is simply our most productive chance to regain strength for the running class. “
In September, Trump also traveled to Michigan to attend the UAW strike, but visited a non-union plant in Macomb County, where he pleaded with the UAW to help him run for president.
“Shawn, help Trump and you’ll be able to take a great two-month vacation, come back and be better than ever,” Trump said. “In the other direction, you may not have a vacation, Shawn. Et in no time. ” You probably wouldn’t have a union, you probably wouldn’t have a job, you probably wouldn’t get anything.
Fain has been a critic of Trump.
“Trump is a yellow,” Fain said in Washington, adding that Trump has never been elegant and that his speeches are cheap, while the moves speak louder.
“Donald Trump opposes everything the UAW stands for. When we go back to our basic questions: wages. Retirement. Health care. That’s what this election is about,” Fain said. “Instead of talking about our union, Joe Biden supported us. “
In November, the UAW ratified new contracts with the three companies that included significant raises, an end to the progressive wage system, and innovations in automakers’ pension benefits.
Biden is a “jobs president,” Whitmer said in a statement Thursday.
“Under President Biden, we’ve noticed the creation of 14 million jobs, adding 800,000 production jobs, which is more than any president in a single term,” Whitmer said. “Michiganders know what that means: it means that the education they’ve paid for can come in handy right away, it means you probably won’t break a tire on the way to the frame because they hired someone to fix those potholes, it means your adult kids can do it. He lives alone. “
Biden ended his stint in the union corridor by congratulating government officials in the crowd, calling Whitmer “the governor of the country” and Dingell a “fighter. “But Biden added that what’s happening in Michigan is an issue for the rest of the country. especially what the UAW staff has accomplished.
“Thank you and the whole country owes you,” Biden said to the UAW workers in Warren. “You’re not only helping auto workers, you’re helping every worker in the world.”
