BALTIMORE – The Nationals made another replacement for their bullpen before today’s suspended game against the Orioles, selling to Dakota Bacus and Ryne Harper right in their ex-replace practice in Fredericksburg.
But that doesn’t necessarily mean Harper may not make an appearance at Camden Yards until the end of the night.
Because clubs can raise a 29th player to their active roster for the nine-inning game scheduled later tonight, the Nationals can stay as Harper and have him play that role. He may not be eligible to pitch in the last 4 innings of the game, however, he can pitch tonight and then perform in Fredericksburg on Saturday.
Harper, one of Davey Martinez’s most productive players out of the bullpen during the first 3 weeks of the season, having played in 8 of the first 15 games finished at the national championships. The 31-year-old inspired five consecutive goalless appearances from the start, but has since struggled, allowing a total of 8 runs and 3 home runs in his last 2 2/3 innings.
“He threw the ball well,” Martinez said during his pre-game consultation with reporters about Zoom. “We want him to move on, but we just want to give him a little respite. He’s been batting batters lately. All those launchers will tell you that they feel smartArray … However, we looked at other things about him and the idea he might wish for. a little recess.
Once you are officially in the minors, you will need to spend 10 days there before you can be called (unless the pitcher is injured).
“We’ll see what happens, but he’s going through to have a little break and be in a position to pass whenever we want,” Martinez said.
Bacus joins the bullpen for tonight’s two games and may make his primary league debut here. The 29-year right, a ninth-round pick in the 2012 draft that reached DC a year later in the industry that sent Kurt Suzuki back to Oakland, made 225 minor league appearances in his career, with a 3.53 ERA. and a WHIP of 1,293.
“We had reports (about) him,” Martinez said. “So we just need to bring in a new arm.”
While the Nationals are in the Camden Yards area for tonight’s games, Sean Doolittle heads to Fredericksburg to begin his rehab after what the team called “right knee fatigue.”
Doolittle, who placed himself on the 10-day injury list on Thursday, has not looked good on the mound all this season, his straight speed has dropped several mph. He allowed nine of 18 batters to succeed at the base and served three home runs.
Before he starts pitching again, Martinez the veteran left-hander to make sure his legs are healthy.
“We don’t need it to expand bad behavior right now,” the technician said. “We need it to make progress. We felt like in the last two days he was doing that. But he ran his tail to check and do it right. So I hope that in the next 10 days I understand, we will bring him back.” here and win some games. »
