Arkansas State Trooper Retreats After Crashing into Patrol Car in Wrong Vehicle During Chase

An Arkansas state police officer has retired after hijacking the wrong car from a highway in a failed attempt to prevent a hurried driver from forcing a chase.

Cpl. Thomas Hubbard was chasing two cars traveling at more than a hundred mph when he grabbed a white Cadillac sedan and elbowed it in the rear, causing the suspect to veer off the road and crash into a barrier.

Precision immobilizer (PIT), also known as tactical vehicle intervention, is a NASCAR that U. S. police can use to forcibly prevent cars from escaping.

But in this case, in the chase near Little Rock, Hubbard performed the maneuver in a similar vehicle whose driver had done nothing wrong yet and was driven toward the median. Police dash camera footage shows patrol vehicles circling the troubled Cadillac.

Neither occupant of the Cadillac was injured in the incident and Yahoo said it declined the offer of medical care.

An ongoing investigation within the Arkansas State Police Department led Hubbard to resign. He has been on duty since the incident and has not made any comment.

State police spokeswoman Cindy Murphy said Tuesday that Hubbard has been on duty since the Sept. 10 incident.

“We immediately knew there was a challenge because the vehicle that had been [controlled] did not participate in the pursuit,” he said, adding that he did not know if the intended target had been captured.

Arkansas police are, according to Carscoops, more willing than U. S. forces to implement the precision restriction strategy and will do so above the 35 mph threshold adhered to by officers in the states.

“Generally speaking, this is a harmful tactic, as it can lead to spills and even injury to the officials involved,” the site comments.

He did not indicate how fast the Cadillac was traveling as it headed toward the barrier.
