CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Army soldiers found one more dead body on Tuesday as they were scouring the site of Monday’s clash with New People’s Army (NPA) rebels in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, a top regional Army official said.

Maj. Gen. Jose Maria II Corps, commanding general of the army’s 4th Infantry Division, said the discovery brings to 10 the death toll in the army’s operation against NPA rebels inside the town of Malaybalay on Christmas Day.

The army first counted nine dead, adding 3 women. The tenth death, according to Cuerpo, is a man.

Brig. Gen. Michele Anayron, commander of the army’s Third Infantry Brigade, said all of the deaths are estimated to have occurred a few years ago.

As of midday Tuesday, the bodies had still been transported to the city center.

Lt. Col. Anthony Bacus, commander of the Army’s 8th Infantry Battalion, told reporters Tuesday that bodies were suffering due to rain in the area and difficult terrain.

Cuerpo previously promised to hand over the bodies to the local government so that once identified they can be claimed through their respective relatives.
