Ancient human remains discovered at the site of a Toronto structure

A crew installing a water service line uncovered human remains Jan. 5 at their worksite site on Withrow Avenue, according to City of Toronto officials.

Const. Laura Brabant of the Toronto police says an anthropologist was called in to deal with the remains. “The anthropologist went to the site and indicated that the remains were from an old indigenous cemetery marked in this area,” he said.

In a statement, the city of Toronto said the structure at the site will be halted pending an investigation.

“The anthropologist will give orders to the people once the investigation is completed,” the people said.

The domain has been known to be an archaeological site since at least 1886, when crews excavating the initial structure of Withrow Avenue reportedly discovered mass graves in the domain.

Withrow Public School now occupies the site of former Indian encampments where a spearhead dating back about 7,000 years was found, according to a city report on the Danforth Avenue domain that includes Greektown.

The police continue to maintain the domain and the remains, pending further orders from the anthropologist.
