America’s Biggest Motorcycle Rally Is About to Start, Because of Course It Is

The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, one of the largest motorcycle meetings in the world that attracts about 500,000 more people a year to the city of South Dakota, continues from August 7-16. As CNN noted, some runners have already begun riding in the city, which has a population of less than 7,000, despite the objections of most residents.

“About 60% of Sturgis residents, when they were interviewed, told the city they would prefer the occasion not to happen as planned this year,” CNN reported. Unfortunately, locals have little to say about the comings and goings of the two-wheeled Sturgis pilgrims. As the city administrator, Daniel Ainslie, said at the point of sale: “As a city, we can’t do anything, we shouldn’t barricade and say, “You can’t go in.”

So come in, they’re going to do it. But what kind of precautions will be taken for event number 80? A quick look at the first page of the rally’s online page comprises only two mentions of coronavirus: one about travel restrictions on tribal lands and the other on rules for serving alcoholic and malted beverages. There are, of course, other measures in position, but due to the state’s lax reaction to coronavirus, CNN noted that many recommendations, such as 50% capacity in bars and restaurants, are not “legally enforceable.”

What else is in the program despite the pandemic? A complete list of concerts scheduled for rally day at Sturgis Buffalo Chip Campground.

But who would agree to play an exhibition in a super spreader? Smash Mouth, of course.
