Albon to get Ricciardo’s former F1 race engineer from British GP

Simon Rennie will re-play a Formula One role in Red Bull as Alex Albon’s new racing engineer at this weekend’s British Grand Prix.

Rennie joined Red Bull in 2013 and worked as a career engineer for Mark Webber and Daniel Ricciardo until 2018, when he left a traveler role to fill a position at the factory.

Red Bull says Rennie’s return to a position on the floor will be “the delight and wisdom base of her group of floor engineers.”

“As a team, we are committed to maximizing the RB16 and our drivers as we continue our championship crusade this shortened and condensed season,” said a statement from Red Bull.

Albon’s previous race engineer, Mike Lugg, who also worked alongside Pierre Gasly before the Frenchman was demoted to AlphaTauri midway through the 2019 season, will move to the factory.

Albon has struggled to adapt to the form of teammate Max Verstappen this year, with the Dutchman winning two podiums in the first 3 races of the 2020 season.

The Anglo-Thai driver returned from position 13 on the grid to take 5th place in Hungary after being eliminated from qualifying in Q2, after a fourth position in the Styria Grand Prix and a drop at the season opener in Austria.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner praised Albon for his “great work” at the Hungarian Grand Prix and advised that he not be criticized for his performances so far this year.

“Obviously, as a team, it wasn’t an ideal start for the season, but apart from the DNF, we were going to add up some smart points,” Albon said.

“I think, having said that, the car can only get better, so I feel positive. We know the spaces in which we want to paint and with Silverstone as a house race near the factory, that’s good news.”

“I think we can expect to get a smart result there, historically, it’s a very smart track for the team, and it’s a track I like to drive.”

Albon has lately ranks fifth in the drivers’ rankings, 11 Verstappen numbers in third place. In the constructors’ championship, Red Bull is time and 66 Mercedes numbers.
