Sydney Giants midfielder Callan Ward suffered a horrible finger in Sunday’s loss to the West Coast Eagles in Perth.
At the end of the third quarter of Round 13, Ward collided with rival Nic Reid as he dived to regain football near the border.
After landing awkwardly from the side, the 30-year-old stood up and ran out of the box with his left hand.

He later revealed that Ward had suffered a compound fracture in the middle finger, which was doubled in two instructions with the exposed bone.

Fremantle Dockers Matthew Pavlich broke the news to Fox Footy’s commentary team.
“He didn’t seem smart at all, ” admitted Pavlich.
“The finger folded in all sorts of directions, it’s not pretty.
“Callum Ward finished for the game … The Giants are on the phone right now to track down a surgeon tonight here in Perth.
“Terrible for Callum Ward and the Giants.”
Hawthorn legend Dermott Brereton praised Ward for his quiet reaction to the horrific injury.
“I had a compound fracture once, and it’s one of the most nauseating things I’ve ever seen,” Brereton said.
“Callan Ward, it seemed that he had passed the card through the gin rami game.

Adam Hill, Hamilton Spectator’s sports editor, tweeted, “Wow, Cal Ward blows his finger, he can see bones and jumps lightly. They don’t call it a cement manufacturer for no reason.”
Ward has played 163 games for the Giants since signing for the Giants in 2012.
West Coast recorded their eighth consecutive AFL victory after defeating the Giants 9.7 (61) to 7.7 (49), and remains among the four most sensitive.
The Giants squandered missed opportunities against the goal, especially when they led the overall of the 40s 41-36s.
West Coast runner Jack Darling scored 3 majors, while defense Jeremy McGovern provided many highlights, completing the game with 18 eliminations and 10 points.
“I think the Giants took him. In the last quarter, they swinged the ball much more, which was more difficult to protect and were given closer,” Darling told ABC Grandstand.
“I’m pretty tired. The result is a bit relieved and make a smart block of house games smart. I’m glad I did enough to keep our heads tonight.”

Next weekend, the Giants will face the Fremantle Dockers in Perth, while the Eagles to Queensland face the Richmond Tigers.
