One guy was arrested and charged after attempting to escape a police checkpoint in South Auckland that had been established when the city had entered the restrictions of alert spot 3.

The driving force was traveling north on State Highway 1 in Mumbai when he tried to avoid police using truck diversion, assistant commissioner Richard Chambers said today.

A brief chase was initiated and then abandoned due to dangerous driving.

Eagle police helicopter placed the vehicle in a shelter in Drury and the guy was arrested without incident, Chambers said.

This is the first arrest since level 3 lock restrictions arrived last Wednesday.

The 58-year-old man is scheduled to appear in Manukau District Court on 31 August on several charges.

This comes after police brought 3 more checkpoints in South Auckland, bringing the total number of checkpoints in the region to 13.

Police arrested 69,486 cars in and out of Auckland at 4 p.m. yesterday, of which 2,205 were returned, Chambers said. Delays are expected in rush hour.

Police continue to conduct convenience patrols and road surveillance in critical facilities, adding supermarkets, pharmacies and Covid-19 sites.

Four other people have been warned to violate Level 3 restrictions since they took effect in Auckland on August 12.

In one incident, police won a report after it was noticed that other people had no social estrangement in the domain of Saint-Héliers at a time before 1 p.m. Sunday.

The police went to the beach and spoke to the other people on the beach, who were in their other bubbles and were basically working out, and informed them how to stay away from each other under the restrictions of alert point 3.
