A1(M) accident: Seventeen enthusiasts hospitalised after minibus crash on UK’s main motorway

Seventeen other people are hospitalised after a minibus full of football fans overturned on the A1(M) on Saturday.

Emergency arrived at the scene on Britain’s main highway near Pontefract on April 13 following reports of a twist of fate involving a black Skoda Fabia and a single-decker Iris minibus, believed to be carrying South Shields FC supporters.

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said: “We responded to the incident with a large amount of resources and 17 patients were transported to area hospitals.

South Shields FC director Lee Picton told the BBC he felt “sick to his stomach” after hearing about the injured fans.

He said the club would communicate “personally” with injured fans and offer their help.

Picton said: “We’ll do everything we can as a club to reach out to those other people to see how they’re doing and offer them our support. “

He added that other enthusiasts flocked to the crash site to “offer comfort to those involved. “

Following an initial investigation, Yorkshire Police said they believed there was a third vehicle on the road alongside the Skoda Fabia and an Iris single-decker minibus.

Officers from the Traffic Police Unit are continuing their investigations, the service added.
