It hasn’t even been a week yet, and citizens facing detoured traffic on a busy road in Egg Harbor Township are already speeding through their quiet neighborhood.
Last week, Somers Point-Mays Landing Road closed as crews presented what will likely be a year-long task to rehabilitate a small bridge near the intersection with Steelmanville Road.
The signalized detour takes motorists to Bevis Mill Road, which just reopened after a bridge was replaced.
The posted speed limit on Somers Point-Mays Landing Road is 50 MPH, while on Bevis Mill Road it is 25.
Not everyone respects the 25 MPH speed restriction signs.
A long thread of angry posts recently appeared to appear on a Facebook addressed to Egg Harbor Township, discussing those who fly recklessly down this narrow, quiet street.

Others then chimed in with the following comments:
we should get a petition together from the neighborhood asking for more patrol. I had to call a couple days ago, I was nearly side swiped by someone going around me over the double lines, while my baby was in the car. I get it, it’s frustrating to be inconvenienced but that doesn’t mean those who reside on the detour have to be this concerned for our safety
I live across from Scullville Bible church & unfortunately have to go down your road because of the detour. I do around 30mph And I’m tailgated evey time!! People Suck!!
I live next door to Perry Lane. You see the traffic that helps keep you moving, as if they can forget about the signs. It’s crazy and it hasn’t been a week yet.
It’s already so bad that some wonder if transient speed bumps can be installed on Bevis Mill Road.
Is there a way for TWP to install transient speed stops on the Bevis grinder?Or have more police presence to make certain cars slow down? It’s only a matter of time before something bad happens on this road now.
It remains to be seen if the Egg Harbor Township Police Department will set up patrols on Bevis Mill Road, but regardless, hit-and-run tickets in New Jersey evidently don’t come cheap.
The fine for the high average price in New Jersey can cost you a few hundred dollars, plus court fees, not to mention the potential addition of problems to your license.
Speeding tickets start at $85 in the Garden State if you exceed the posted limit of 1 to nine MPH.
You’ve been warned…

We wrote a community petition asking for more patrols. I had to call a few days ago, almost got hit in the side because someone was surrounding me on the double lines, while my baby was in the car. I understand. , it’s frustrating that they bother us, but that doesn’t mean those who live on the bypass are all that concerned about our safety.
