The Toyota Prius is the subject of a new recall after the automaker said that in “rare situations,” hybrid cars do not go into protection mode in the event of hybrid formula failure.
The automaker announced the recall last Wednesday and said about 267,000 are affected in the United States. Globally, the total rises to 752,000. Specifically, the withdrawal refers to Prius 2013 to 2015 and Prius V. 2014 to 2017.
In the event of a hybrid formula failure, the Prius and Prius V are intended to switch to built-in protection mode to allow owners to pass the house without too many problems. However, if the built-in protection mode is activated due to an internal problem, drivers may lose strength and the car may stop. Loss of strength while driving increases the threat of an accident.
The purposes of strength and braking would remain if that happens, Toyota said.
The automaker has planned an update to the hybrid formula that will activate the built-in protection mode. The upgrade will be lost when owners bring their Prius to a dealership for the recall. Toyota added that for any visitor who has suffered an inverter failure as a result of this problem, the automaker will also update the component at no cost.
Affected Prius owners will get a recall starting in August.
