DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. (AP) — A man is at the gates and an innocent bystander was killed after a high-speed chase in DeKalb County caused a twist of fate at a busy intersection Saturday afternoon. Some citizens question the movements of the police officers involved. in the chase.
“The lady, it didn’t end well for her. . . she’s dead and it’s an unhappy situation,” witness Dereck Muhammad told FOX 5.
Georgia State Patrol officials said shortly after 2 p. m. , officers saw a driver running toward a gold Infiniti pickup truck with no tags. They tried to stop him, but he ran away.
Authorities later learned that the suspect, later known as Arin Jamal Taylor of Decatur, was seeking to leave Newton and Douglas counties on charges including fleeing, making a false call and driving with a suspended license.
“The two state cruisers were that beige truck. The guy who was driving ended up going through the fire. He walked through the gas station, jumped the median, so officials gave him away at that point. ” Muhammad recalled.
He told FOX Five that he had thought the chase was over until he saw the foot soldiers glue to the Infiniti back down Memorial Drive moments later. That’s when Taylor lit the fireplace and struck a woman driving a blue Honda Civic, killing her.
“I look at the light and think, ‘This is going to end well,'” he said. “She never saw it coming. That car hit her really hard. “
Muhammad said that amid the heavy traffic, he thought the infantrymen had taken other measures.
“When I first saw it, I wondered why the officers didn’t leave. Because they put a lot of other people at risk. I know this guy needs to be caught, but at some point you put a lot of other people at risk,” he said. FOX 5.
Photos show the fatal crash at the intersection of Memorial Drive and North Hairston Road on Oct. 14, 2023 (Billy Heath).
Although the government eventually arrested Taylor, Muhammad said he didn’t think he valued a blameless life.
FOX Five has reached out to the Georgia State Patrol for comment. We are still waiting for a response.
Authorities have not yet known the victim of the crash.
Taylor was charged with fleeing, driving impaired, suspended driver’s license, driving under the influence, obstruction and first-degree murder while operating a vehicle in that incident.
