A car worker tells how Biden’s ad propelled him to celebrity status

General Motors’ car, Gerald Lang, is “incredulous,” calming his nerves, holding his enthusiasm and facing the weight of a sudden new celebrity prestige since last Monday.

That’s when the crusade of alleged presidential candidate Joe Biden announced that Lang would speak at the Democratic National Convention, which begins Monday. He replaced Lang’s life and put a 47-year-old father in a different way in the spotlight.

“Sometimes it’s like being a little celebrity,” Lang said, referring to the workers’ reaction to GM Orion’s assembly plant, where he works as a leader in the quality department.

“A lot of other people are excited,” said Lang, who is also vice president of UAW Local 5960, which represents the maximum number of hourly workers in the factory. “They know where I am when it comes to problems. We stick together and other people say, “I know they make us proud.” My social networks are exploding.”

Lang spoke exclusively to the Detroit Free Press before his speech, which he has yet to write. But bother, Lang knows what the world needs to hear about the American auto industry and Detroit Three automotive staff when he takes the stage.

Even some UAWs who plan to vote for President Donald Trump say they will watch Lang.

On Friday, neither Lang nor a spokesman for Biden’s crusade knew the day and time for Lang to speak or how many minutes he would be assigned. The conference is virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic, so it will make a laptop from home.

Lang took notes while talking to the loose press, creating and testing curtains for his speech, which he said the editors of crusade speeches would probably move on to him.

Your chance came here at short notice. About a week ago, Biden’s crusade contacted the UAW regional workplace to ask if there were any members who could talk fluently about the issues facing U.S. automotive staff. And the auto industry, Lang said. Biden says he has a plan to create a million new jobs in the U.S. auto industry. By promoting the progression of electric cars and low-emission technologies.

For example, Lang’s regional representative, Rhonda Maurer, asked if she would.

“It’s almost amazing at first. Who am I?” said Lang.

But Lang is no stranger to public conversation or politics. As a union leader, Lang holds monthly meetings in front of dozens of members, he said.

And he sees politics as his hobby. The son of a VFW position commander, Lang learned to be active and sometimes close to his heart, as did his father, Marvin, with THE VFW. Lang is a member of the Michigan Democratic Party, a district delegate to the 8th District of Congress of Michigan, and serves on the UAW Community Action Program policy committee.

Lang didn’t have to think much before he said yes to the campaign offer.

“Whenever you get the chance to talk to eminent politicians, it’s. We have disorder as automotive personnel and I need to get in the way of these guys so they know what we’re up against, what we’re up against,” Lang said. “That’s what excites me. Every time I can walk into a room with those people, I tell them what’s going on.”

Ben Halle, Biden’s michigan communications director, said the crusade appealed to Lang because the conference aimed to “make the voices of hardworking Americans like Gerald heard.”

“Vice President Biden has understood that the automotive industry is the nerve center of Michigan manufacturing,” Halle said. “Gerald’s story demonstrates the resilience of automotive personnel in Michigan.”

Lang lives in the small village of Lake Orion, about 40 miles north of Detroit, with his wife Sarah, a 17-year-old son and a 7-year-old daughter. The local UAW it is helping to lead represents some 1,100 members who paint in the Orion Assembly.

He grew up in Saginaw, where his father collected coal from GM’s now-defunct iron smelter. Lang’s father died in 1983 at the age of 53. His mother also died, but he has a healthy team of brothers: sisters and four brothers.

“I hope you see, ” said Lang about his speech. “I haven’t contacted them too much because I’m still waiting for the details.”

Orion Assembly reflects Biden’s cross message. At a crusade site on August 5, Biden exhibits his Convertible Corvette, reverses the feeling that GM will do an all-electric edition of the iconic sports car, and says, “How is it possible that U.S.-made cars no longer exist?” Once we can take ownership of the 21st century market again by switching to electric cars. “

GM’s 4.3 million square foot Orion facility happens to be very modern. It is a tangible example of the car manufacturer’s long-term vision of all-electric cars and self-driving cars. GM is building the electric car he’s been selling lately, the Chevrolet Bolt, to Orion. It also assembles the Chevrolet Sonic compact car and Cruise AV control cars.

In March 2019, GM announced that it would invest $300 million to refit the plant to charge a new electric vehicle and 400 jobs. GM has yet to know the new car.

In addition: GM plans to build a new electric car, spend $300 million and rent 400 at Lake Orion

It would be great to establish a plug for my business; I need to sell vehicles,” said Lang, who has worked for GM at Orion Assembly for 14 years. But he doesn’t know how many of his speeches will mention plans for Orion. Expect to have” a few minutes” to talk.

His driving message will be: “If we want to sell cars in America, we have to manufacture them in America.”

“The speech will be about car production and the (Biden) plan to create jobs in car production,” Lang said, referring to Biden’s plan to create a million new jobs in the automotive sector.

Lang will also talk about increased exports.

“Since the Bolt was built, it was sent to other countries,” Lang said. “There are many opportunities to load more cars in our factory or in my brothers’ factories in Fiat-Chrysler and Ford. We need those cars and we’ll send them abroad.”

GM did not comment on Biden’s invitation to his employee. In an email to Free Press, GM spokeswoman Jeannine Ginivan said: “General Motors is proud to employ more than 86,000 people who paint hard across the United States. As we seek a global loss of accidents, emissions and congestion, ours is a duty- we have to realize this vision.”

But UAW President Rory Gamble calls Lang the voice of many UAW members who need a safe long-term in an ever-changing industry.

“The next four years will be transformative,” Gamble told Free Press. “UAW members like Gerald will be part of a team to protect a new generation of electric vehicle technologies, and the gain deserves to be a continuation of the well-paying jobs that enable our members to live, play and raise their families for generations to come. . “

The UAW approved the Biden-Harris ticket. Gamble said Biden’s production and next-generation policy “will protect Gerald in the long run and keep jobs here at home for generations to come.”

But not all union members agree and say Lang would probably not speak for them.

“He only speaks on behalf of some automotive employees because there are thousands who disagree or will help Biden,” said Omar Guevara, who worked at GM’s plant in Detroit Hamtramck and now GM Flint Assembly. He said he was a member of the Conservative union. “There are thousands of President Trump.”

“Even though I’m a member of the UAW, I’ve been a Republican,” said Mike D., who asked that his last call not be used given the sensitivity of politics. He works at GM’s Pontiac stamping plant. “I’m a Trump supporter. I’m a supporter of the Second Amendment. I protect the flag and kneel before the cross. The Democratic Party, in all areas, is more interested in supporting outsourcing U.S. jobs than in protective jobs in the U.S. . “

Lang’s appearance is vital because Michigan is a changing state. In 2016, Trump defeated Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton with just 10,704 votes to win the state. This helped him secure the votes needed through the Electoral College to win the presidency.

Democrats don’t know that fact, and this time they need Michigan’s auto staff to know that Biden supports them, said Federal Rep. Debbie Dingell, Dearborn Democrat.

“Four years ago, it was the auto personnel who told me we had a problem. Me at the time at the UAW picnic, walking and thinking, “Hey, your daughter, we can’t vote for her,” Dingell told the Free Press, referring to Clinton.

“The workers hadn’t had a pay raise in 10 years,” Dingell said. “Joe Biden understood that. I’ve known Joe Biden for 30 years and it’s understood that the American auto industry is the backbone of the economy.”

Biden was vice president of then-President Barack Obama. Management is known for helping the U.S. auto industry during the 2009 recession, when the government injected about $80 billion into GM and Chrysler and placed them through structured bankruptcy.

In 2015, when Trump was running for president, he advised an appearance in Michigan that if he didn’t necessarily oppose approving the government’s aid that helped GM and Chrysler, letting them go bankrupt and rebuilding would also have been acceptable.

But a year later, Trump replaced the course. He promoted a policy to force the Detroit Three to bring jobs to the United States. Then, in 2018, she criticized GM CEO Mary Barra on Twitter for GM’s plan for four U.S. facilities.

Arkansas auto racer and political connoisseur Mack McLarty said he was “not at all surprised” that Biden’s camp called a Michigan car clerk to speak at the convention.

“This reflects who Joe Biden is as user and leader. He’s known as ‘Lunch Bucket Joe’ so to speak,” McLarty told Free Press. “He’s been known as someone who connects with the staff of this country.”

McLarty, a years-long friend of former President Bill Clinton, his white house staff leader. McLarty is currently president of McLarty Cos., a circle of fourth-generation relatives of franchise businesses in Little Rock. He is also president and co-founder of consulting firm McLarty Associates in D.C.

“Whenever there is someone like Mr. Lang who can step in and communicate about our industry in a sincere and fair way, I like it,” McLarty said.

Biden’s plan to raise a million jobs to the auto industry, McLarty said it’s feasible.

“He understands the importance of rebuilding our country in terms of production capacity,” McLarty said. “He has very serious plans that are well conceived and has talented other people around him. That is, it is capable of building a bipartisan consensus.”

This is not an argument where Lang can be sold. He’s open saying he’s going to vote for Biden.

“When they ask me that, it reminds me of my father, ” said Lang. “He never told me who he voted for, even when I asked him, he is a secret person. I didn’t know where I was in politics.”

When Lang leaves his pencil and scores, the verbal exchange with Free Press ends and admits that he is nervous. In fact, the closer you get to the convention, the more nervous your nervousness will increase.

“You have to make sure you take everything out and do nothing,” Lang said.

But he understands the opportunity he gives you and says you’re grateful.

“I’m excited to communicate about what we’re doing and restoring jobs, Orion Assembly and what we’re doing with electric cars and the fact that we’re bringing back America’s auto industry,” Lang said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to communicate. In the call of who has the same ideals as me and who supports what I do in life, that’s what puts food on my table.”
