North Carolina police arrested a 25-year-old man, Wilson, claiming he shot his 5-year-old neighbor in the head while the boy played outdoors with his sisters.
The Wilson Times, Laurinburg Exchange and WGHP said the Carolinas Regional Sheriffs Service task forces arrested Darius Nathaniel Sessoms on Monday, accusing him of murder in connection with Cannon Hinnant’s death.
He took position around 5:33 p.m. Sunday.
According to police, Cannon rides his motorcycle with his sisters, who are 8 and 7 years old. Authorities say Sessoms left his home and walked toward Cannon, pointing a gun at the boy’s head and pulling the trigger.
Sessoms, a neighbor told police, had dined with Cannon’s father before the shooting.
A neighbor said Sessoms returned home after the fatal shooting and believed the suspect was playing with the children.
“For a moment I thought, ‘This couldn’t happen,'” the neighbor said. “People don’t cross the street and kill children.”
Sessoms is believed to have fled in a 2019 Toyota Corolla. Police discovered him Monday night in a space in Goldsboro.
Cannon’s mother, Bonny Waddell, told the Wilson Times that the boy should start kindergarten on Monday and that he had just learned to write his name.
“He’s just a loving kid, ” he said.
The reason for the shooting is unknown.
