An unattended 3-year-old boy was driving a truck at a California fuel station when the vehicle fatally struck a 2-year-old boy, the government said.
The incident happened Saturday in Woodland in the Sacramento metropolitan area, police said.
The owner of the Dodge pickup truck left the vehicle running while parked at a pump with his 3-year-old son in a car seat and drove to the gas station store, according to police. The 3-year-old then managed to get out of the car seat and into the driver’s seat, according to police.
“The truck began to move forward and collided with a two-year-old boy who was near a taco stand at the edge of the lot,” Woodland police said Monday.
Officers responded to a report of a child who had been struck by a vehicle around 3:46 p. m. , police said. The 2-year-old boy was sitting at a table when the collision occurred, police said. Family members transported the young woman to the hospital, where she died from her injuries, police said.
The 2-year-old girl known to the government and her circle of relatives as Ailahni Sanchez Martinez, of Woodland. His father, Sandro Sanchez, told Sacramento ABC associate KXTV that he was about to turn 3 in April.
Witnesses told police that the 3-year-old boy in the driver’s seat, Woodland police sergeant. Robert Towle told KXTV.
All parties cooperated with the investigation, police said. No arrests have been made, police said.
“We are working to have a thorough investigation carried out. This includes collecting statements, analyzing evidence, reviewing CCTV footage, creating scene diagrams, and drafting investigative reports,” police said. “We ask for the community’s patience as this happens. “
The completed investigation will be sent to the local prosecutor for review, police said.
A monument to Ailahni has been erected at the site of the crash, as his circle of relatives wait for accountability.
“This user took the life of a little girl,” Sanchez told KXTV. “His truck pretended to be on its way. “
