2026 Lancia Gamma will also offer a hybrid after Stellantis’ tuning course

Update 12/18: It’s been a year since we last heard news about the upcoming Lancia Gamma, but there’s news today and it signals a slight replacement in Stellantis’ plans. While in the past the automaker seemed to have decided to make the Gamma a fully electric model, it now plans to offer hybrid versions as well, reflecting a broader adjustment of its electrification strategy across all its brands. Stellantis is leveraging its adaptable STLA platforms to accommodate electric and hybrid cars, offering buyers more features in a market that still prioritizes variety.

The announcement was made on Wednesday at the Stellantis circular table, held at the Ministry of Commerce and Made in Italy (MIMIT). At the meeting, Stellantis pledged to invest 2 billion euros ($2. 1 billion) in Italian manufacturing, a move aimed at strengthening its relationship with the Italian government. Stellantis European boss Jean-Philippe Imparato revealed that the Gamma would come with hybrid powertrains to meet growing market demands.

Lancia issued a statement explaining the decision:

“The decision to expand the offer of the new model with electrified engines represents a concrete reaction to genuine market demands and makes it possible to satisfy any mobility need. All this translates into a predictable expansion of production volumes and the consequent increase in competitiveness of the brand in the global market.

Gamma will use Stellantis’ STLA Medium multi-energy platform, which supports hybrid and electric configurations. Production of the model is expected to begin at the Stellantis factory in Melfi, Italy, in 2026.

Lancia has revealed its roadmap for the next decade, and it’s no surprise that electrification is taking a backseat. The adventure began with the arrival of the new Ypsilon in 2024, followed by the launch of the flagship Gamma in 2026, and culminates with a new electrified Delta in 2028.

The Italian brand confirmed that the upcoming Ypsilon will be offered in both pure battery-powered and hybrid variants. However, beginning in 2026, the company will exclusively introduce new EVs, and by 2028, their entire lineup will consist solely of electric-powered models. This implies that the hybrid Ypsilon will have a relatively short lifespan, lasting only four years.

In 2026, Lancia is expected to launch its first dedicated electric vehicle, which will be manufactured at the Stellantis plant in Melfi, Italy. At 185 inches (four. 7 meters) long, it will be about the same length as a BMW four-series. Lancia CEO Luca Napolitano says it will be a stylish fastback based on the mid-range STLA platform. In particular, in the past it had shown the resurrection of the Gamma plate. “Our second flagship car, which is expected to debut in 2026 and will be called ‘Gamma,'” Napolitano said.

“The flagship of Casa Lancia will be a beautiful and elegant Italian car, beautiful outside and beautiful inside, where it will really look like you feel in the living room of an Italian house,” said Napolitano. “The STLA Medium platform will be perfect for Lancia, as a native BEV will be very efficient and will guarantee high levels of comfort, offering both a front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive version.”

Thanks to its platform, Lancia expects its flagship model to get up to 700 km of range per charge. It also expects 50 percent of EV sales to come from European countries outside Italy.

Unfortunately, few details have been revealed about the new Delta, which is due in 2028, but speaking to Italian media in the past, Luca Napolitano confirmed the return of the compact model saying: “It will return and it will be a true Delta – an exciting car, a manifesto of progress and technology, and obviously it will be electric”.

The three vehicles announced by Lancia are part of Stellantis’ Dare Forward 2030 strategy. The automaker hopes that this plan will allow it to stop emitting carbon until 2038.
