In U.S. spec, the 2025 Honda Civic Hybrid arrives in summer 2024 and will include a 2.0-liter inline-4 engine, running on an efficiency-focused Atkinson cycle. It’s part of Honda’s 2-motor hybrid system that is noteworthy in how it omits the need for anything resembling a conventional transmission.
This is the electric motor’s formula for providing effective propulsion, especially at urban speeds, giving the responsive acceleration and near-instantaneous torque delivery of an electric vehicle, while the gasoline engine acts more like a generator at higher speeds. Brought with the newer CR-V and Accord hybrids, they allow for higher engine torque at low speeds, reinforcing this impression.
2023 Honda CR-V Hybrid system
Honda hasn’t had access to this category since it discontinued the Insight hybrid sedan in the spring of 2022, when the return of the Civic Hybrid to the U. S. was first shown. The Insight marked the arrival of the 2-motor formula for a compact car, following the discontinuation of an earlier Civic Hybrid (the former IMA hybrid formula) in 2015.
Rivals to the Civic Hybrid will come with the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid, Toyota Corolla Hybrid, and Toyota Prius Hybrid, all of which have editions that earn 50 mpg combined or more. The existing Honda Accord Hybrid, a larger sedan but with a system edition of the Civic Hybrid, gets up to 48 mpg combined.

Honda sold about 264,000 Civics in the U. S. It was released in the U. S. in 2021, the model’s last full year before a redesign in 2022, and before that, the Insight was a niche model selling at around 20,000 a year. Honda claims to have manufactured 11 million Civics in North America. since 1988.
Honda previously confirmed that the upcoming Civic Hybrid is due in sedan and hatchback form. Civic Hybrid production will start with the sedan at its plant in Alliston, Ontario, while Civic hybrid hatchback production will follow in Greensburg, Indiana. Both the hybrid system and the engine are made at facilities in Ohio.
