Stellantis has revealed details about its new STLA Large platform, which is expected to underpin the 2025 Dodge Charger and Jeep Wagoneer S EV.
The flexible platform can accommodate AWD, FWD, and RWD configurations, as well as electric, hybrid, and internal combustion powertrains.
In addition to offering an estimated range of 500 miles, the EV versions of the STLA Large are said to provide a zero-to-62 mph time of around 2. 0 seconds.
Stellantis, the parent company of well-known brands such as Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram, today revealed key details about its new STLA Large platform. The company said the flexible architecture is expected to be included in upcoming Dodge and Jeep models to be released later this year. .
This is the 2025 electric Jeep Wagoneer S, which was shown to be coming to the United States this fall. Last week, Dodge posted several teaser photos of the 2025 Charger on its social media channels, mentioning that it would be “available by the end of 2024. “
The timing of those announcements likely isn’t coincidental, and that’s why today’s news about the STLA-L platform provides more details about both the new Charger and Wagoneer S as well as six other unspecified vehicles that will launch globally sometime during the next coupe of years. New models from Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and Chrysler will be the first of that bunch.
While STLA Large is an EV-centric platform that’s available with either a 400- or 800-volt architecture, Stellantis says it can also accommodate hybrid and internal-combustion powertrains. That corroborates online reports that the new Dodge Charger will be offered not only as an EV, but also with a gas-fed engine—likely a version of the Hurricane twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six that’s currently capable of producing over 500 horsepower.
STLA-L also supports transverse and longitudinal motor configurations and limited-slip differentials. Notably, Stellantis notes that the platform can withstand “extreme force that will surpass any of the existing V-8 Hellcats. “The engine (found in the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170) makes up to 1,025 horsepower, we think it’s probably the ghost of the higher-performance edition of the new Charger EV.
Thanks to its flexible nature, the STLA Large platform offers 3 other drivetrain configurations, adding all-wheel drive, front-wheel drive, and rear-wheel drive. Its wheelbase can be extended from 113. 0 to 121. 0 inches. Stellantis says overall lengths range from 187. 6 to 201. 8 inches; Overall widths range from 74. 7 to 79. 9 inches. The lowest ground clearance on the platform is 5. 5 inches and the lowest is 11. 3 inches. For off-road models like the Jeep, Stellantis says the largest tire diameter that can be supported is 32. 6 inches.
Other main points from today’s announcement provide additional main points about upcoming EV models that will use the STLA Large platform. Its battery capacity is said to be between 85. 0 and 118. 0 kWh, but it’s unclear whether that’s their net or gross capacity (we suspect the latter). Stellantis says it’s aiming for a diversity of 500 miles for electric sedans with an 800-volt architecture. Although this estimate is likely based on the more positive European WLTP verification cycle, which suggests an EPA equivalent of around 425 miles, it is still impressive.
As for the electric propulsion modules that integrate the gearbox, motor and inverter, Stellantis claims that it will use silicon carbide for the semiconductor material, with the aim of minimizing losses compared to the classic silicon material. Porsche is doing the same with its PPE platform that will help Macan EV. Stellantis also said that over-the-air updates will help powertrain functionality over the life of the vehicles. STLA-L will help the company’s next-generation technologies, adding STLA Brain, STLA SmartCockpit and STLA AutoDrive.
Stellantis’ other platforms come with the STLA designations Small, Medium, and Frame. The latter will force the upcoming Ram 1500 REV and Ram 1500 Ramcharger plug-in hybrid electric pickup trucks. We believe the first Chrysler EV (possibly based on the AirFlow concept) will use the STLA-M platform.
