MANCHESTER, New Jersey – A Guy from Scotch Plains was accused of leaving the scene of an ATV with a twist of fate on Sunday in heritage Minerals assets that left a Guy from New York in critical condition, police said Wednesday.
Scotch Plains’ Brett Durant, 31, accused of knowingly abandoning the scene of a twist of fate that resulted in a serious physical injury, Manchester captain Todd Malland said.
John Guzman, 28, of Queens, New York, suffered a serious head injury and several fractures and was airlifted to the University of Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune after the turn of fate around 5:15 p.m., Malland said. Guzman indexed in critical but solid condition, he said.
Malland said the government learned guzman was driving a blue Yamaha motorcycle to the west along the south side of the lake when his ATV crashed head-on through a larger ATV from side to side.
Witnesses told police that the larger side-to-side ATV, described as a white Polaris RZR, had in all likelihood emerged from a smaller path and headed east when it crashed into Guzman’s quad.
Guzman was expelled from the off-road vehicle and partly conscious when the government arrived, Malland said. He was not wearing any protective apparatus at the time of the accident, possibly increasing the severity of his injuries, Malland said.
Patrolman Michael Anderson and Detective Danny Barker uncovered physical evidence linking a 2019 ATV Polaris RZR side-by-side to the accident, evidence consistent with witness statements.
In the following interviews, the researchers met Durant as the polaris driving force and imaginable location of the ATV, Malland said. He was discovered hiding in an isolated wooded domain in ASARCO’s assets several miles from the crash site, he said. He was seized pending forfeiture.
Durant arrested without incident, Malland said. He was released on a subpoena pending a first court appearance.
Manchester police were assisted in the rescue through firefighters from the chimney departments of Manchester, Ridgeway and Whiting, paramedics from the Manchester Township Emergency Services Division and paramedics of Robert Wood Johnson.
Malland said firefighters played a key role in their off-road cars by sending paramedics to the scene to lend Guzman a hand.
This is the time for the serious incident at ASARCO, also known as Crystal Lake last month. Edwin Caballero, 23, of Plainfield, drowned in Crystal Lake in early July; his painting discovered in about 16 feet of water on the lake on the former mining property.
Police have patrolled the domain to verify and deter others from leaving the site, which is privately owned and closed for recreational and/or other reasons.
“It’s a crime of criminals to enter or on the property,” Malland said.
Manchester police are urging to obey the symptoms of “No Pass” posted on the site.
Intruders are subject to heavy fines and consequences until incarceration for being on the property.
