General Motors has produced countless impressive sports cars over the years such as the Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, and Chevrolet Corvette, to name a few. As such, the little Opel GT lives in the shadow of those bigger, tougher, and more American offerings. However, that doesn’t mean that the small German two-seater deserves less attention today.
This almost the best Opel GT of 1973, to be sold at RM Sotheby’s upcoming auction of the eclectic Elkhart collection, will have even die-hard American car enthusiasts stand up and take notice. This car is described as an “exceptional unrestored example” of the Opel GT race and features original Rallye Orange paint and a completely original interior.
This car has also been driven slightly over the years. With 14,995 miles on the odometer at the time of RM Sotheby’s cataloguing, this car averages just 319 miles consistent with the year. It is also presented with the original service manual and a collection of invoices dating back years.
RM Sotheby’s claims that this is one of the “most productive original examples” of the existing Opel GT. However, as noted above, the Opel GT has not yet attracted enthusiasts and collectors, so even the most productive examples still have a value less than $30,000 RM Sotheby’s believes it will generate between $20,000 and $25,000 when it goes on auction at the end of October, a fair value for an original piece of GM history like this , in our opinion.
The only problem with this car is the transmission. While the Opel GT turns out to be the best candidate for a four-speed sergged manual transmission, it was also presented with a three-speed automatic. Automatic is a popular choice in the car (perhaps because it was sold through Buick dealerships), so, unsurprisingly, this style has the granizer.
If that’s not enough to turn off this Opel GT, check out the list here for more data and photos.

“The trans was filled with new oil and sawdust. My father’s friend told me to take it easy and I’ll be fine for a while, my dad sold the car next week. “
How honorable.
103,463 Opel GT games were manufactured between August 1968 and July 1973, and more than part of that production was exported to the United States, where it was sold through Buick’s network of brokers. According to Wikipedia in German, the car won very well in the market. United States.
It was an exclusive car for Opel, iconic, much remembered and several of them stay alive through enthusiasts. The annotated wiki article says that you can use other engines and gearboxes of other Opel models with this car.
I also have a 1973 Opel with A / T, and have never had a challenge with it for about 50 years. I heard it’s a sustainable transmission, stealing what little power there should be.
A giant car had one in 1971, an orange logo with a new $ 3,300 charge. It was eye-catching and the retracted light fixtures were brilliant. The way in the front was out of this world. I was low and in the shop for maintenance because of that.
Didn’t the 73 have other taillights on the 69-72?They lost the single taillight and incorporated it into the taillights. The other taillights were also divided into 73, orange/red. At least, that’s how my 73 differed from my 69 and 70.
