The piece was executed to perfection and performed better than Auburn could have imagined. In devising the game plan for that year’s Iron Bowl, Auburn, as is the case with all groups, knew the script he was looking to follow from the beginning. A draw against Williams was to be the first scrum game, but few may have expected the outcome.

That is, until Auburn took the box and saw that the Alabama defense lined up with the precise look the Tigers expected. Tide’s deep and linebackers were positioned exactly as the Tigers envisioned it when they designed the play. Now it’s just execution.
“Starting the game with a draw, you don’t say, ‘This is happening home; we went into space with that,’ but it was very well organized,” McIntyre said. “. . . It was actually like a better storm, because they were covered exactly as we thought. It worked, and dazzlingly with his vision and elusiveness, he was actually able to bounce back and get it all the way.
Williams’ 80-yard landing highlighted the single-game on-court functionality of his Auburn career. He finished with a career-high 204 yards and two landings while averaging a consistent 7. 8 yards with the finish that night at Jordan Hare Stadium.
Nearly two decades later, Williams still affectionately refers to this piece as one of the most memorable of his career. He hopes Auburn can break some runs of the same length Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium as the Tigers intend to rely on his resurgence. I play floor with the hope of provoking the state.
Since Williams took over as interim head coach on Halloween, Auburn has had one of the most productive floor attacks in the country, averaging 259. 33 yards on the floor per game (fifth nationally) and 5. 44 yards per game (18). Tank Bigsby and Jarquez Hunter recorded back-to-back 100-yard duels consistent with the performances, drawing comparisons to Williams and former teammate Ronnie Brown as the Tigers went 2-1 since taking over.
COMMENTARY: Goodman: Story is for Iron Bowl
“It actually comes from converting power and what those guys do, how they play and the fan base,” McIntyre said. Not being the tallest fullback, however, I told other people all along that I would try to weigh a defensive position if necessary. After the game, before the game: that’s the kind of player and user he is. I believe that power feeds only on being a born leader.
Now he’s going to take Auburn to an Iron Bowl that might lack national implications: For the first time since 2007, no team has a chance to win a national or SEC championship, but it still has its own bets. With a win, as unlikely as it might be for Auburn, Williams would not only help his alma mater earn a bowl spot for a tenth straight season and snap a five-game losing streak for the Tigers in Tuscaloosa, but write another chapter in the iron bowl’s history.
“It’s going to be fun to see him on the opposite sidelines of Coach Saban, the guy we played against when he was at LSU and obviously, you know, they call him the GOAT,” McIntyre said. “. . . It will be a memorable moment for him, I’m sure, and for all of us, the Auburn family, to see one of our greats come out to lead our team to an Iron Bowl victory. “
Even if Auburn stumbles in Tuscaloosa, where he enters as a loser with three touchdowns, it would be hard to spoil Williams’ historic Iron Bowl moment.
“Giving our is not a guarantee that we will win, however, what we can do is look in the mirror and we can be satisfied with the results,” Williams said. “We’ll put it on the line and see what happens. “
