Audi’s taxonomy doesn’t take much effort to decipher. The number signifies its position among its family members, while E-Tron now refers to battery-electric propulsion and Sportback means a sleeker, coupe-like roof line that offers a bit more fashion than the longroof variants. Thus, when Audi says it’s debuting the Q4 Sportback E-Tron concept, you may already have a good idea of what to expect.

Audi released the live stream featuring the Q4 Sportback E-Tron concept Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. PT (1:15 p.m. ET). The automaker presented a quick preview of the car on the preview label on its live streaming page on YouTube, however all Audi said was that this presentation will show the newest member of the SUV Q family.

Taking into account what I said above, it is quite simple to conclude that the Q4 Sportback E-Tron concept will be a crossover coupe that will pack electric propulsion and drag between the Q3 and Q5 in terms of physical footprint. Most of the underlying bits have already been previewed in forms. The exclusively European Q3 Sportback gives us a concept of what the painting will look like, while the original concept of the Q4 E-Tron debuted at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show (RIP). We also saw the E-Tron/Sportback mix through the E-Tron Sportback, which we saw at the user in Los Angeles in November.

Perhaps the most attractive component of the Q4 Sportback E-Tron concept will be the platform. It is rumoured that it will be the first Audi EV to use the Volkswagen Group’s MEB platform, a flexible EV chassis that will become the basis of a wide variety of VW Group vehicles, adding the highly anticipated VW ID Buzz microbus. Although what we see today is still called concept, Audi has already told us that the production edition would largely correspond to the concept, so we are extremely happy to see what is in the other aspect of the curtain.

This was originally published in Roadshow.
